-
- Kim called in the morning while Millie was at exercise class. She
- invited us for dinner.
-
- Had a wonderful evening, sharing little experiences of the past,
- family news and planning future events. Millie got a Mother's day
- gift and cards which Kim had brought for Steve and Lilly. Kim may
- attend the play with Millie and the girls next Friday. They will try
- to work in some biking together as occasions arise.

- Lawns and Barbecues Make Family Life Feel Like "Home"
-
- In arriving, we commented on how well their yard looks.
-
- The grass in the front and the back are very well kept. There was
- brief discussion that Stephanie and Amy are doing a great job mowing
- the lawn, getting exercise that accomplishes a household requirement.
-
- Ron mentioned they hire professional care for the lawn.
-
- Did not review Steven Pinker's observation in his book, "How the Mind
- Works," that people like having patches of grass surrounding the
- house, because humans evolved on the African Savanna for hundreds of
- thousands of years. This exposure, it is speculated, hard wired the
- mind to "feel good" looking at grass, because it feels like "home."
-
- The birch trees in the back yard have flourished. Kim noted the trees
- offer a refreshing background from various windows in the house. Ron
- commented they provide shade on hot afternoons, which reduces air
- conditioning costs.
-
- Ron barbecued and Kim microwaved, another combination of ancient
- practice and modern convenience.

- Ron's Job with City - Project to Provide Fiber Optic Infrastructure
- Expanding Infrastructure May Bring More Fascinating Stories on TV
-
- Ron related an interesting project the City of Alameda has underway to
- install a fiber optic communication system. Sounds like they will
- compete with AT&T and others to provide enhanced telecommunication
- infrastructure. Ron indicated this will help make up for tax revenue
- lost as a result of the Navy leaving Alameda.
-
- We recalled work installing fiber optic cables in San Francisco, on
- Drumm street, a few months ago. This may provide better Internet
- access down-the-road. Ron mentioned a variety of engineering issues
- that relate to using fiber optic cables layed in the street, and using
- them in a building like at the Golden Gateway. So we will keep our
- fingers crossed.
-
- Millie commented on the advantage of expanding competition for cable
- service. In Concord the only service provider is TCI. It is not
- clear that the City's project will accomplish this goal.
-
- However, consideration of the prospect led to interesting conversation
- for a Saturday afternoon, as Millie related a recent program she saw
- on TCI's Alfred Hitchock cable channel.
-
- A man gained prominence by showing a jar with unknown contents, but of
- presummed nefarious origins. People would gather to speculate about
- the contents, and this led to confessions of sins and unrealized
- designs, perhaps yielding a cathartic effect, i.e., clensing the soul.
- One observer of the jar told of being forced by an overbearing father
- to drown a kitten. Others made equally dark or worrisome confessions.
- So the whole affair seemed innocent and helpful. The man's wife,
- questioned that the jar contained anything that justified attention.
- She eventually discovered that the contents were in fact benign,
- consisting of mere paper and things that gave appearance of mystery,
- but of no real consequence. Perhaps enviously, she planned to reveal
- the truth to eliminate the fascination with the jar, and hence the
- man's place of prominence. The show ended with the next gathering of
- the group observing the wife's head in the jar. He had at last found
- a path to add substance to reputation, and had siezed the opportunity,
- or maybe it was sythed.
-
- What are the lessons to be drawn?
-
- Truth is a moving target?
- Uncovering secrets can be dangerous?
- Be careful what you ask for, you may get it?
- Important project can lead to discussing silly stories?
-
- If the City's project is half as fascinating as the story it spawned
- this afternoon, the denizens will be well served.

- Truth is a Moving Target When Common Sense Solves the Mystery
-
- Millie and Kim visited about a recent "murder" in San Francisco, with
- curious twists in the story that are being reported. It might turn
- out that the woman was not murdered, but was reckless in personal
- conduct that led, in a complex scenario, endemic to human relations,
- to a sad end. There was speculation about the range of human conduct
- that seems so bizarre, as to appear impossible, to those who live
- mainstream lives. Baker street reasoning imposes personal "common
- sense" onto others, ref SDS 1 5443, and concludes that, since a story
- conflicts with what we would have done, the truth must lie elsewhere.
-
- One might, for example impose on the story about the drowning cat in
- the discussion above, that it came from a talk show where a celebrity
- revealed dark childhood secrets that account for extraordinary mood
- swings; or, that a notorious outlaw was started on a path of mayhem by
- an uncaring father. These common story lines in the mind, are used
- without volition or awareness, and so require caution in concluding
- the truth about specific events, even when experienced first hand.
-
- Common sense accelerates the gap between our "story" and what really
- happened. ref OF 1 4235

- Amy and Amanda at Disnyland Mother's Day Weekend; Millie's Gift
-
- Kim took Amy and Amanda to Disnyland for Amy's birthday, as planned at
- Easter, ref SDS 15 1298 She marveled at their energy. After a long,
- hard day, standing in lines for 60 second rides, the girls were still
- game for a late night swim.
-
- Did not discuss that this trip would provide good material to write a
- letter to Mat, as Amy did in March for Amanda. ref SDS 14 7739
- ..
- There was some discussion about procedures at Disnyland to help
- adults with children, who are too young to go on a ride, to coordinate
- so the adults can both ride, while the children are given care. Kim's
- explanation of the procedure brought to mind the fox, the hen and the
- cat.
-
- Ron recalled this is a logic problem.
-
- Kim checked the family library of children's books to find the correct
- name of the story. We couldn't find it. She checked Aesop's Fables
- and did not see it there. Generally it's about a woman taking a fox,
- a cat and a hen across a river in a boat, that can only accommodate two
- of the creatures at once, without leaving either the cat or the fox
- alone with the hen, since they would eat the hen. Lucille Johnston
- would cite this as the basic solution to management problems. Even
- thorny, complex scenarios can be segmented into simple sequences that
- are solved by following the rule of the fox, the cat and hen. This
- came up creating complex "intelligence," on 990505. ref SDS 16 2958
-
- When Kim took Amanda home from the Disnyland trip, Steve and Lilly
- gave her a Mother's day gift and cards for Millie. This evening,
- Millie opened the gift and was extremely pleased with the
- thoughtfulness of a wind chime that has a cat face for the base unit.
-
- Kim indicated this is the kind of merchandise that her company sells.

- Negotiating Lease Entails Analysis, Research, Visibility
-
- Kim explained an assignment she has to negotiate a lease renewal for a
- store at the London airport. She seems to have become the special-
- projects person for the CEO, or other exec at Kim's office. Evidently
- the duty-free status of the store has, or is, due to expire. Some of
- Kim's colleagues have indicated this change in status needs to be
- considered in the lease negotiations. Sounds like more research is
- needed to nail down specific commercial impacts, and whether it should
- affect the cost of the space for the store in London. They probably
- have some history with stores at other international venues, that can
- guide Kim's review, if it is available.

- Parents Provide Environment for Children to Flourish
-
- Bill and Pam are taking Nolan to Cooperstown for the induction of
- Nolan's namesake, Nolan Ryan, into the baseball hall of fame, the week
- of the annual clan rally at Lake Shasta. Nolan will have a lot of
- material in his scrap book, a lot of legacy to benchmark his progress.
- He is very fortunate his parents set high standards for him. Somehow
- the discussion turned to Bill's young twins, whom we visited during
- the pic nic at Tilden Park in Oakland on 931003. ref SDS 2 3072
-
- Kim has quite a collection of a particular kind of doll that has
- become popular. She indicated they are made in China. Each has its
- own name. Viewing her collection upstairs showed an interest in
- little things that, over time, come to represent an investment that is
- larger than the sum of its parts. Transferred meaning and deferred
- rewards that build over a lifetime are another kind of standard that
- children learn to value.

- Grandmother's Day Big Success; Amy Outstanding in School Play
-
- Millie complimented Amy and her school on a good performance for
- grandparents day. She recalled that Amy seemed to be the highlight of
- the play. The entire effort was well done.
-
- Some thought might be given to include helping the children through
- the motions of finding their family members and introducing them to
- teachers or a friend. Millie mentioned the 6th graders did seek out
- and serve the adults in attendance, and this was well done.
-
- Finding family members and making introductions could be practiced as
- a set of steps for children to do after the play. One concern might
- be that there is a mix of ages at this school, and below a certain
- age, this kind of exercise is too complicated, or the logistics and
- atmosphere is not conducive to focusing on social issues. School admin
- people might have some ideas on this.
-
-
- ..
- Steve's Annual Clan Rally at Lake Shasta will be Crowded
-
- The trip to Cooperstown, will mean Pam cannot stay the full week at
- Lake Shasta.
-
- Millie and I will try to join the group this year for the houseboat
- vacation week at Lake Shasta.
-
- [On 990523 discussed with Steve. ref SDS 17 0001.]
-
- Ron mentioned there may be people sleeping on the roof and camping
- out, so it might be overcrowded for us to join. Could be that Millie
- could fit in, and I will wait until next year to learn first hand
- about "Steve and his merry band of vacationing warriors (or
- revelers??)."

- Girls are Biking with Mom, Grandmother Might Tag Along Sometime
-
- Kim has been doing some bike riding with the girls. They rode their
- bikes to Millie's on Easter, ref SDS 15 0624, and a few weeks ago,
- they biked to Millie's again to deliver a Mother's day card. Millie
- commented how on the excellent workmanship displayed by the girls in
- fashioning a custom card for grandmother.
-
- Kim showed some stamps they have for printing custom designs. The
- family used this method this past Christmas for their annual progress
- report. There seemed to be a wide range of stamps. Kim indicated
- that using the system is quite a project. It lets the girls
- experience the challenge and fun of creativity.
-
- Millie's bike has a flat, just from non-use. There was discussion
- about Kim and the girls stopping by on occasion to see if Millie can
- join them for a bike ride. This would set a target for getting the
- tire pumped up across the street.

- Millie Attending Performance of Play in San Francisco on 990529
-
- Discussed possibility of Kim joining Millie and the girls to see
- "Rents" next Friday in the city. We have an extra ticket, which I can
- use if Kim cannot make it.
-
- Kim seemed to be open to this. She can take BART to the City after
- work and hook up with the girls for dinner before the performance.

-
- Invited Ron and Kim to visit next weekend if they are are in town for
- Memorial Day. Ron may have a soccer event, and Stephanie may have
- soccer or volleyball. He received a call this evening asking him to
- take the place of an injured player. Kim mentioned Ron's expertise as
- a goalie. Playing another position might be fun.
-
- [On 990527 Memorial Day visit at Millie's. ref SDS 21 0001]
-
- They have been invited to visit Kim's sister and her husband in
- Carmel; but, have not yet decided how next weekend will work out.
-
- Leaving to go home, the girls came downstairs to say good by.
-
- Amy had done a wonderful job styling Steph's hair. She had given
- Stephanie a glamorous look, showing Stephanie has lot of opportunity
- in her future to be accomplished and successful in many ways.
- ..
- If the Memorial Day visit works out, Amy and Steph can
- investigate to see what the computer "can remember," as discussed on
- 961231. ref SDS 3 0928 We can find out how some things turned out
- this week, and maybe help the "computer remember" some more, later on
