0505 - Summary/Objective
0506 -
050601 - Follow up ref SDS 21 0000, ref SDS 18 0000.
050602 -
050603 - For some reason unzip failed on Wayne's computer. This evening Morris
050604 - indicated the cause may be due to a filename longer than 8 char in the
050605 - zip file. I could not find this problem. Uploaded the files in their
050606 - regular directories. Sent Wayne a letter with instructions on how to
050607 - download. ref SDS 0 7489
050608 -
050609 - Submitted ref DIT 1 0000 linked to this record for instructions.
050610 -
050611 - Note: the actual date of the updated files was 980714, because I
050612 - sent the stuff the next day.
050613 -
050614 - [On 980728 sent another update to include some corrections and
050615 - improvements. ref SDS 23 0000]
050616 -
050617 - [On 980729 received letter from Wayne that the "save" operation, in
050618 - the code for the update sent on 980713, failed. ref SDS 24 0000]
050619 -
050620 - [On 980730 Wayne solved zu problem by getting a newer version from

051002 - Pkunzip failing to install SDS program update on Wayne's W95 Computer
051003 -
051004 - Early this morning, I uploaded another SDS program update for Wayne.
051005 - I used CPU #10 in Concord which is running W98, a beta version.
051006 -
051007 - Wayne sent an email back saying that he downloaded the files from the
051008 - Web site but when he tried to unzip them, the operating system or the
051009 - pkunzip program returned a message saying the DOS versions are
051010 - incompatible.
051011 -
051012 - The last update was on 980421. ref SDS 5 0000 It and all previous
051013 - updates have been successful.

051016 -
051017 - ..
051018 - Re-submitted SDS Program Update - It Failed to Unzip on Wayne's Sys
051019 -
051020 - Since I received Wayne's email in San Francisco, I zipped up another
051021 - set on CPU #8, which is running W95, and sent them via email.
051022 -
051023 - He got them, but sent an email oa 1215 saying that unzip failed.
051024 -
051025 - Seems like Wayne mentioned that he got a new computer about that same
051026 - time, or maybe later. So it is possible his system needs to be
051027 - configured to accomodate prior versions of DOS.
051028 -
051029 - I called Wayne. He ran the ver command at a DOS prompt and got a
051030 - slightly different number from the on my computer in San Francisco.
051031 -
051032 - This indicates a setting in his system configuration, or on my
051033 - computer has been established inadvertantly, as part of something
051034 - else, that is blocking the normal operation of pkunzip. We checked
051035 - the date and size of his file, and it was okay.
051036 -
051037 - Another possibility is that his computer has a virus that got on his
051038 - system since the previous update in April.
051039 -
051040 - ..
051041 -
051042 - I sent him another copy of the pkunzip program, after testing it on
051043 - my system. He got the program file, but it also failed.
051044 -
051045 - It appears that we received the current version of pkzip and pkunzip
051046 - on 941219. ref SDS 1 0000 The date of the files we are using is a
051047 - little later, but the sizes are the same. I think the dates are
051048 - different because I changed the name to z and zu.

0514 -
051401 - ..
051402 - Solution - send update without zipping
051403 -
051404 - There are very few files that actually need to be updated on Wayne's
051405 - computer.
051406 -
051407 - The last update was on 980428, as recorded in the record for 980421.
051408 - ref SDS 5 0000
051409 -
051410 - [On 980729 received letter from Wayne that the "save" operation, in
051411 - the code for the update sent on 980713, failed. ref SDS 24 0000]
051412 -
051413 - I zipped the files for the period from 980428 to today for following
051414 - directories...
051415 -
051416 - c: sd 01
051417 - c: sd 03
051418 - h: sd 05
051419 -
051420 - I deleted the existing files in these directories on e: and then
051421 - unzipped the update files to the e: drive.
051422 -
051423 - I then uploaded these drives to the Web server in the appropriate
051424 - directories.
051425 -
051426 - ..
051427 - Wayne can download from these directories directly to his computer,
051428 - as follows:
051429 -
051430 - ..
051431 - Web Server Wayne's Computer
051432 - ----------------
051433 - 01 04 c: 01 04
051434 - sd 01 c: sd 01
051435 - sd 03 c: sd 03
051436 - sd 04 h: sd 04
051437 - sd 05 h: sd 05
051438 -
051439 - Wayne need not download the files in 01 04, since they are
051440 - development files. There are a lot of them because I made a design
051441 - change to the macro assembler routine that required putting the
051442 - filename in all of these files. It may take 20 minutes to download
051443 - the files in 01 04. If Wayne does not have time to download them
051444 - now, it can be done at a later time

051453 - directory level on the local server, as shown above.

051455 - Use "Binary" option shown on the right side of the transfer screen.

051802 - Filenames Longer than 8 Characters Causes Problem Wayne is Having
051803 -
051804 - He said pkunzip can return the message Wayne encountered, if there is
051805 - a file in the zip file that has a filename longer than 8 characters
051806 - or if a file extension is longer than 3 characters.
051807 -
051808 - I checked and did not find any instances of that occurring. We did
051809 - have a file in the Help directories that had an htm extension, but I
051810 - deleted it the other day, so it is not clear that it could be the
051811 - cause of the problem Wayne had. Morover it was only in the hs.zip
051812 - file, and so should not have caused a problem with cs.zip.
051813 -
051814 - Think I will try to send Wayne some separate packages to see if we
051815 - can isolate where the failure is occurring.
051816 -
051817 - Actually, seems like Wayne tried to unzip hs.zip and that also
051818 - failed.
