1008 - Summary/Objective
1009 -
100901 - Follow up work at ref SDS 9 line 33. Advised I have sent this to
100902 - him via Internet.
100903 -
100904 - Jeff feels it is a big job to enter all of the documents from 1983
100905 - into SDS, per our discussion at ref SDS 7 line 88.
100906 -
100907 - I explained how using SDS to create documents eliminates this effort,
100908 - because it only takes a few seconds to identify a document, and to
100909 - place it in the context of the SDS record so each document has
100910 - meaning.
100911 -
100912 - I offered to assist him, and said it would be much faster and cheaper
100913 - for Seawest for me to provide under the aegis of communication
100914 - metrics. Jeff said Seawest cannot afford this support.

1607 - Summary/Objective
1608 -
160801 - Jeff asked about our efforts to create a Windows application. I
160802 - explained this is very slow because of lack of finance. He asked how
160803 - much it might cost to produce a Windows version of SDS. I said that
160804 - for IBM or Microsoft to create it the cost could run between $2M -
160805 - $4M; if I could get a good programmer to work with me, it might be
160806 - done for $200K - $400K.
160807 -
160808 - Jeff said he has had a lot of problems running SDS under Windows
160809 - lately. The program is constantly crashing, so he is now mainly
160810 - running it under DOS. He realizes the memory problem could be solved
160811 - by using os2, but his company is standardizing on Windows. He feels
160812 - that if he used os2, even though it works better, others at Seawest
160813 - would be disappointed, feel threatened, and this would harm his
160814 - career.
160815 -
160816 - I may have sent the solution to this problem at ref SDS 2 line 81.
160817 -
160818 - Jeff said that running SDS under DOS is an even greater hardship now
160819 - that he has followed my recommendations to adopt Windows for
160820 - multi-tasking, ref SDS 1 line 68, because he is using Wordperfect for
160821 - Windows, and so he cannot access the Wordperfect files any longer from
160822 - SDS.
160823 -
160824 -
160825 - SDS Conflicts with Conventional Methods
160826 -
160827 - I explained this condition existed at PG&E, and it was solved by
160828 - creating correspondence in SDS instead of Wordperfect, particularly
160829 - transmittal letters. This is more efficient than booting up
160830 - Wordperfect, and has a better organization within the SDS Doc Log.
160831 - Jeff said he recognizes this, but the other people in his office use
160832 - Wordperfect. He feels that if he does not use Wordperfect, others in
160833 - his office will be disappointed and his career will suffer.
160834 -
160835 - I said there may be some things we can do to adjust the configuration
160836 - of his computer to improve the way SDS runs under Windows. I will
160837 - research this, and send him any solution.
160838 -
160839 - [Investigated at ref SDS 10 line 41.]
160840 -
160841 -
160842 - Jeff said he wants to use SDS for its document management and subject
160843 - indexing features. I mentioned our discussions in December about him
160844 - being on a committee at Seawest to improve the organization of
160845 - information, ref SDS 3 line 133.
160846 -
160847 -
160848 - Not Enough Time to Succeed
160849 -
160850 - Jeff continues to worry that he does not have enough time to capture
160851 - the record. I explained the idea that in today's world organizations
160852 - do not have enough time NOT to capture the record, and one way to meet
160853 - this need is to use a communication engineer, ref SDS 4 line 65. Jeff
160854 - said Seawest cannot afford this, per above under Doc Log.
