0608 - Summary/Objective
0609 -
060901 - Followed up work at ref SDS 6 line 42. Inquired about fixing the
060902 - high beam on the lights and changing the air conditioning unit.
060903 -
060904 - Looks like it might be best keep our AC unit, since it works better
060905 - than the unit the government proposes to change.

0612 - Discussion
0613 -
061301 - Asked about requirement for replacing the air conditioner. Bob
061302 - initially said he did not know anything about this matter, then he
061303 - said he is generally aware that Ford is replacing AC units for R134A,
061304 - but not for R12 AC units (or possibly the other way around).
061305 -
061306 - I reviewed the record at ref SDS 4 line 48, citing San Bruno Ford's
061307 - service manager advising the AC unit in our 93 Mercury Sable was to be
061308 - replaced prior to 36K miles, when the AC unit is serviced.
061309 -
061310 - Bob said he noticed that S&C serviced the AC under invoice 232067
061311 - dated 941013, ref DRP 9 line 55.
061312 -
061313 - He said he will investigate this matter and call us back today.
061314 -
061315 -
061316 - When he calls back, I need to ask about the high beam lights, which
061317 - S&C inspected at ref DRP 9 line 51.
061318 -
061319 - When we were driving, in Montana, it seemed like the high beam was
061320 - not working correctly.
061321 -
061322 -
061323 -
0614 -
0615 -
0616 - 0854 Bob called back
0617 -
061701 - What about lights?
061702 -
061703 - He said the lights were not checked for correctly showing the
061704 - highbeam. That is a separate test that requires adjusting for
061705 - alignment. Bob said the entry in the invoice that says text lights
061706 - were checked, ref DRP 9 line 51, does not mean they checked to see
061707 - that the lights were working correctly.
061708 -
061709 -
061710 -
061711 - Bob said he has been unable to verify that Ford will pay to swap out
061712 - the AC unit. He said this may cost $2K. The freon is not going to
061713 - be available in a year or so.
061714 -
061715 - He says this is only being done for new Lincolns and it is included
061716 - in the price of the car.
061717 -
061718 - Bob seemed upset that San Bruno Ford made this representation.
061719 -
061720 -
061721 -
061722 - ..
0618 -
0619 -
0620 - 0923 called San Bruno Ford
0621 -
062101 - Initially talked to Hollis. He was unfamiliar with the representation
062102 - by Charles Lee, at ref SDS 4 line 48.
062103 -
062104 - Bruce said Ford motor has stockpiled 600,000 gallons of freon for the
062105 - older cars. He said that if the car is still in warranty and the
062106 - freon is no longer available, or can no longer be installed as a
062107 - result of a legal requirement and/or interpretation, then Ford will
062108 - swap out the AC unit under a rule that they must be able to service
062109 - the vehicle.
062110 -
062111 - Bruce said Ford has prepared a "kit" to change the AC units. He
062112 - checked his records from Ford and found the cost is about $150 for the
062113 - kit, and it shows 2.5 hours of installation time. The total cost
062114 - should be less than $400.
062115 -
062116 - Bruce said he is having difficulty getting the kit from Ford.
062117 -
062118 - [On 941101 service manager at S&C Ford researched this matter and
062119 - reported Ford does not have a "kit" on this. ref SDS 7 6437]
062120 -
062121 - R134 is the new system; it is not as efficient as the existing R12.
062122 - He recently drove a vehicle with R134 and he feels it does not cool as
062123 - well.
062124 -
062125 - Bruce said Ford plans to continue supporting the R12 systems for as
062126 - long as the freon is available. He expects this will be for the next
062127 - 2 - 3 years. Thus, there will be no mandatory requirement to replace
062128 - the AC units.
062129 -
062130 -
062131 -
062132 -
0622 -
0623 -
0624 - 0952 Bruce called back
0625 -
062501 - He said he spoke to Charles. Bruce said Charles recalled telling us
062502 - that Ford will only swap out the AC unit, if there is no more R12
062503 - freon available and the car is still under warranty.
062504 -
062505 - I advised that our record does not show any mention of R12 by Charles,
062506 - nor any other qualification with respect to changing the AC unit.
