0504 - ..
0505 - Summary/Objective
0506 -
050601 - Follow up work at ref SDS 5 line 64. Agenda is at ref DRP 1 line 95,
050602 - revised per ref SDS 5 line 94.
050603 -
050604 - Met some interesting people. Was lucky to see Mike Sommers again to
050605 - re-submit the information on POIMS, per below.
050606 -
050607 - Since the agenda has changed so dramatically, per ref SDS 5 line 119,
050608 - and ref SDS 5 line 150, decided to leave early. We have ample
050609 - research on the IH, and are well connected to it through Compuserve
050610 - the Internet and ATT.

051002 - The Entrepreneurial Company of Tomorrow
051003 -
051004 - The morning session introduced TQE (Total Quality Entrepreneurship),
051005 - which is another way to say TQM without doing so, per analysis at ref
051006 - SDS 2 line 85. This was a general introduction of the speaker and the
051007 - topic, to encourage attendance at an afternoon session for more de-
051008 - tails. They are selling consulting services to "install" TQE. Harrell
051009 - suggests using franchising or some other form of profit sharing that
051010 - gives employees greater incentive to improve performance.
051011 -
051012 - Some asked if franchising is most successful where considerable
051013 - training is invested in the staff. Harrell said his firm provides
051014 - all the training.
051015 -
051016 - He recommends not trying to train entrepreneurs, and even seemed to
051017 - say entrepreneurs are not good in a business because they are too
051018 - independent. This is interesting because he won entrepreneur of the
051019 - year award. He described entrepreneurs as genetic descendents of
051020 - nomadic hunters, whereas "managers" are more akin to farmers.
051021 -
051022 - He recommends that employees identify a customer, either internal or
051023 - external. Job performance should be reviewed by customers, rather
051024 - than traditional hierarchy. I don't really understand this because
051025 - the customer of a salesman in a way is the sales manager, same for an
051026 - engineer, it is the engineering manager.
051027 -
051028 - A common attitude among "managers" is to avoid risk. But they are
051029 - willing to take shared risks. TQE seeks to exploit this willingness.
051030 -
051031 - There was not enough time to inquire about the issues of imple-
051032 - mentation at ref SDS 2 line 165.
051033 -
051034 -
051035 - Information Highway
051036 -
051037 - This was presented in summary fashion during a business panel session.
051038 - One person explained IBM's services and benefits from using the
051039 - Internet. Did not explain how this information can be used by
051040 - executives who are busy going from meeting to meeting, call to call.

0705 - Summary/Objective
0706 -
070601 - Jim Maas gave an informative and interesting presentation on the need
070602 - for adequate sleep, and the effects of inadequate sleep. This was
070603 - shown in the agenda at ref DRP 1 line 80. No one expected this
070604 - topic, even though the agenda says it is "Executives Wake Up."
070605 -
070606 - He explained that if we wake up more than a few minutes after a dream
070607 - is over, we cannot remember it.
070608 -
070609 - Possibly another manifestation of inadequate sleep is the dizzyness I
070610 - have encountered recently, ref SDS 4 line 123.

080609 - Boyd sat next to me in the morning session. I gave him a copy of

080622 - Sat next to Patrick during morning session, but did not talk much,
080623 - except for the session on sleep, we exchanged a few comments.
080624 -
080625 - He also attended the TQE presentation. We did not sit together, but
080626 - while walking out, I asked his impression and his line of work. We
080627 - exchanged business cards. I explained how SDS makes it practical
080628 - for managers to capture the information that is helpful to them.
080629 - Patrick requested information. I wanted to show him SDS, but there
080630 - was not a three prong outlet upstairs, so I gave him a copy of POIMS
080631 - article. He will be out of town next week but wants to see a
080632 - demonstration, if possible, when he returns. He suggested I could
080633 - show SDS to their IS manager, Felipe Botero. I explained why it
080634 - usually makes more sense to demonstrate SDS to a senior executive.
080635 - Patrick feels Felipe has enough management experience to evaluate
080636 - SDS, but he wants to see it himself.
080637 -
080638 - At lunch I sat next to:
080639 -
080640 -
080641 - Jim White, P.E.
080642 - President & CEO
080643 - Industrial Electric Service Co.

080648 -
080649 - This seems like a medium size company. Their actual business is
080650 - manufacturing laminated and other wood products. They also
080651 - manufacture material handling equipment for the logging industry.
080652 -
080653 - Jim has a twin brother. Not sure if they are in business together.
080654 - I think his wife was with him. We had an interesting discussion
080655 - about the impact of environmental movement. He said the controversy
080656 - over saving habitat for the spotted owl, has been heightened because
080657 - recent evidence shows this species can flourish outside of old growth
080658 - forests. There have also been several species recently removed from
080659 - the endangered species list.
080660 -
080661 - Jim had a lively discussion with Harry Andrews about motor design. IES
080662 - has a competitive advantage because they get a 450 horsepower moter to
080663 - come to full power within .5 seconds, whereas GE motors take several
080664 - seconds to reach this level. IES seems to have developed proprietary
080665 - design and manufacturing capability that gives them considerable
080666 - advantage in making more productive log handling equipment. This
080667 - interested Harry, because they are considering alternate designs to
080668 - upgrade the hotel elevators, and the capability of the motors is
080669 - important to elevator performance.
080670 -
080671 - I explained a little about SDS and the POIMS concept of converting
080672 - information into knowledge. Jim asked me to send him information on
080673 - this.

080694 - Sat next to Bill in the afternoon session on TQE. Discussed a
080695 - little of SDS in relation to the presentation. He asked for
080696 - information on how to implement these ideas with automation.

1107 -
110701 - Follow up on ref SDS 5 line 167. Need to see voice data entry. Can
110702 - we talk to it?
110703 -
110704 - Saw Mike in the afternoon. I asked to see a demonstration of voice
110705 - data entry, which he said last night was part of the hospital manage-
110706 - ment program he was demonstrating, per ref SDS 5 line 398.
110707 -
110708 - Mike said he cannot show it today because this machine does not have
110709 - that feature. He will send information on it when he gets back to
110710 - Chicago.
110711 -
110712 - This is an indication the system does not work as well as he
110713 - indicated, per ref SDS 5 line 172.
110714 -
110715 - Mike asked for another copy of the article on POIMS and the NWO..., he
110716 - said someone took the copy I gave him yesterday, at ref SDS 5 line
110717 - 144. He thought Millie and I had returned and had taken it.

140603 - line 27.
140604 -
