091804 - to argue that knowledge and ideas can be applied harmfully either by

091807 - I agree with this assessment, but do not feel it warrants fear, except
091808 - to be alert for the danger, and strive to apply knowledge and ideas to
091809 - avoid harm. This seems to follow from the fact that humans basically
091810 - get through every day by using their experience, knowledge and ideas
091811 - for good or ill. Nothing we do can prevent accidents, we can only hope
091812 - to reduce the incident of harm and the ability to recover.  Since harm
091813 - will certainly occur, if we do not use our intellect, our only choice
091814 - is to go forward.

091816 -       Alternatively, it might be argued that "ignorance is bliss"
091817 -       because if don't know calamity is about to strike, we cannot be
091818 -       frightened.  However, we do not really have the choice of
091819 -       ignorance.  Knowledge is thrust upon us all day everyday, and we
091820 -       can only deal with it by consideration.  Over a long time, such
091821 -       inquiry increases our knowledge, so instead of being frightened
091822 -       by lightening and thunder 10,000 years ago, our knowledge now
091823 -       tells us we can "harness" what was previously an ominous power
091824 -       from the heavens (God??).  Yet such inquiry leaves us in another
091825 -       quandry, because it has unleashed an even stronger power of the
091826 -       atom.  So it has been, and so it will be.

091829 - We invent an automobile to speed us to our destination and carry more
091830 - stuff than if we did not grow our knowledge and use it.  However, that
091831 - same manifestation of knowledge and ideas can run over us, if we do
091832 - not use our knowledge to avoid mayhem by installing stop lights and
091833 - cross walks.  However, the lights can fail, or the brakes on the car
091834 - can fail.  This does not seem to me to call for discarding the use of
091835 - knowledge and ideas that produced the car or safety systems.  The same
091836 - argument seems to apply no less to other inventions like neuclear
091837 - devices, ice cream, washing machines, clothing, televisions, chairs,
091838 - plows, books, lamps, refrigeration, cities, dams, roads, parks, peanut
091839 - and jelly sandwiches, and so forth.

091843 - productive, except to again be alert that "good" ideas can be
091844 - misapplied by those with troubled minds.  This seems to me to be
091845 - nothing more than saying a successful life requires eternal vigilence.
091846 - It means "trust" can only be granted based on risk of harm if failure
091847 - occurs.  Accordingly, we are wary of permitting strangers into our
091848 - home, unless circumstances convince us the potential for foul play is
091849 - minimal.  Trust increases based on good experience.

091852 - enriched by enhancing our ability to create and apply this fascinating
091853 - resource.  Moreover, it is an automatic function we cannot escape. We
091854 - cannot avoid using knowledge and ideas because our mind does this
091855 - inherently.  Therefore, the only question is how well we are going to
091856 - do it.  Stated another way, is there anything we can do to improve our
091857 - ability to create and apply knowledge and ideas?  This is a different
091858 - question from asking to what ends should such efforts be directed,
091859 - which deals with things like happiness, morals and so forth.

091862 - we increase our intelligence, I now believe we can for the reasons at
