Integration of Applications
0909 - ..
0910 - Summary/Objective
0911 -
091101 - Don said he received my letter, ref DIP 2, and concluded it showed his
091102 - understanding of SDS was incorrect. He said my comments at
091103 - ref SDS 8 9755 and the sample Schedule, Diary and Doc Log reports,
091104 - attached to ref DIP 2, suggested SDS is different from a tool to
091105 - organize information by subject so it can be retrieved quickly, per
091106 - his understanding at ref SDS 8 9644, and previously at ref SDS 1 5833
091107 -
091108 - Information Management
091109 -
091110 - I explained that SDS does precisely what he has in mind, and gave
091111 - an illustration of filing documents in folders and cabinets by
091112 - project and by subject within each project, like electrical,
091113 - drywall, schedules, budgets, bonds, design, construction, etc.
091114 -
091115 - This allows reports to be drawn that show the chronology on each
091116 - subject individually, which is a common need throughout the
091117 - course of managing projects.
091118 -
091119 - ..
091120 - Automated Integration
091121 - Time - Information - People - Documents
091122 -
091123 - However, SDS also "links" managing information, with managing
091124 - personal scheduling, so that the tasks an executive plans to
091125 - accomplish are linked to the work already done on those tasks.
091126 - This allows each new task to be guided by its history, in the
091127 - same way we rely on our experience to do anything.
091128 -
091129 -
091130 - Emulates Human Memory
091131 -
091132 - We considered how SDS emulates the way human memory integrat-
091133 - es our awarenss of what we do, with the corollary concern
091134 - about what needs to be done as a result. Since people are
091135 - "wired" to do this automatically, it is sometimes difficult
091136 - to appreciate the advantage of emulating it through an auto-
091137 - mated computer program. Why bother?
091138 -
091139 - The advantage arises from the fact that while humans are
091140 - "wired" to perform the "process" of linkage, the strength and
091141 - duarability of such linkage is weak, although some people can
091142 - remember better than others. SDS makes such linkage absolute
091143 - and inviolate, so that once you have exercised your judgement
091144 - to make a link, it will remain until you decide otherwise, so
091145 - that everytime you want to investigate a particular matter,
091146 - all the links you made are still there, unimpeded by time,
091147 - interceding events and emotion. As well, you can come back
091148 - later and make other links or decided on the basis of experi-
091149 - ence that a relationship that seemed correct earlier, really
091150 - does not apply.
091151 -
091152 - Writing the Record is "Performing the Work"
091153 -
091154 - See discussion with Anne Bevington at ref SDS 6 line 166.
091155 -
091156 -
091157 -
091158 - Don asked if SDS organizes information my "keyword"?
091159 -
091160 - I explained SDS uses an advanced form of "key word" organiza-
091161 - tion, since some "subjects" require several words, if not entire
091162 - paragraphs to adequately identify and distinguish them from other
091163 - "subjects."
091164 -
091165 - A simple example is to consider the "subject" of this record.
091166 -
091167 - Is it "SDS"? Is it "Marketing"? Is it "Trial Installations"?
091168 - Is it "Tennis", "Health", "Human Memory", etc.?
091169 -
091170 -
091171 - Subject Indexing & Productivity
091172 -
091173 - This one SDS record is actually about all of the above and a bit
091174 - more. The human mind inherently absorbs events and organizes
091175 - what transpires according to a variety of hierarchies we build up
091176 - over time. As shown on lines 0901 - 0907, SDS does the same
091177 - thing. It provides the "organized structure" that makes "key-
091178 - words" a meaningful tool, and permits Users to instantly find
091179 - what they need when they need it. This improves productivity by
091180 - reducing mistakes and allowing people to work simultaneously more
091181 - carefully, more thoroughly and more quickly.

Tennis
1004 -
100401 - Seems like I am playing much better tennis now, because the ground
100402 - strokes are more consistent. I am serving stronger and vollying
100403 - better, so since changing to a serve and volley game, the whole thing
100404 - seems to work better. Don actually played pretty well today. He made
100405 - fewer mistakes and returned serve well; hit a lot of outright winners
100406 - off my serve. but the pressure to make those shots or loose the point
100407 - tends to build up, and I am hitting more winners on the ground
100408 - strokes.
100409 -
100410 - My knee seems to be holding up much better also, since I have begun to
100411 - run the stairs again, and my elbow is doing better since starting to
100412 - do pushups whenever possible. Evidently these investments in physical
100413 - capital are paying off.
