- Discussion
-
- Grandmother is severley contorted with osteoperosis. She has a hard
- time getting around, but her mind and voice are very sharp and strong.
- ..
- She was diagnosed with osteroprosis about 15 years ago in her mid-60s,
- and it has gotten steadily worse.
- ..
- It was fun to recall for grandmother how growing up she always seemed
- so strong and lively to us kids, even more so than our mother, her
- daughter. Grandmother used to pick us kids up and fling us up in the
- air and catch us. Grandmother said that in those days mother was
- often pregnant so she seemed weak and tired to her children.
- ..
- Grandmother said that growing up she lived on an Indian reservation
- during the early 1900s, in Oklahoma. Her family ran the store for the
- Indians. Her mother would give Indians extra eggs and other dairy
- products that her father produced on their ranch.
- ..
- Some of the Indians had oil, so some shopkeepers raised their prices
- to get more money.
- ..
- They had to ride 10 miles or so to get to town.
- ..
- Grandmother recalled many adventures she had playing with Indian kids
- on the reservation. They taught her about some of the Indian ways and
- traditions. There was also an transition going on, because Indians
- who had land where oil was found were very rich, and wanted to adopt
- modern conveniences.
- ..
- She related a harrowing experience when an Indian got drunk and drove
- up to their property, and shot a number of rounds into the house. No
- one was hurt, so no report was made, and the Indian was not
- prosecuted. Grandmother was very proud of her parents for working
- things out like that on the reservation, rather than always involving
- the authorities.
- ..
- Grandmother's experience growing up on the Indian reservation, and
- having Indians as playmates, led her to marry an Indian. The marriage
- did not last, but provided our family with Indian genetic heratiage.
- ..
- This was a wonderful, exciting story of frontier life. Grandmother
- tired, and we had to leave.
