0606 - Summary
0607 -
060701 - Initially, Mike asked me to go into Set-up, but the Keyboard crashed.
060702 - Eventually got that going, at least for time being.
060703 -
060704 - Mike's instructions were helpful in getting the EMS system installed;
060705 - but it now seems doubtful this will be helpful for SDS.

060707 - He referred me to MT for price on optional battery charger.

060712 - Mike's only comment on the difficulties reported, ref SDS 3, were that
060713 - he wondered if we were using chkdsk /f. I explained that we did.

Keyboard failure, 910529
0706 - Progress
0707 -
070701 - Mike first asked me to call the set-up screen with Ctrl Alt S. This
070702 - would not work which made me think the problem was with the system,
070703 - but after booting the machine several times, I noticed we were getting
070704 - a "keyboard failure" sign.
070705 -
070706 - None of the keys would work.
070707 -
070708 - Opening Superlap Computer
070709 -
070710 - Mike suggested I open the machine to examine the cable connection, by
070711 - first removing the control panel cover, that also houses the keyboard
070712 - cable. There is a screw that can only be removed after first removing
070713 - the control panel. Then removed the battery, and then removed two
070714 - screws at either end of the batter housing. Still could not open the
070715 - cover that permits access to the cable.
070716 -
070717 - Solution
070718 -
070719 - Before going further, we plugged in the AC power adapter, and tried
070720 - the system again, and this time it passed, so the keyboard was working
070721 - again.
070722 -
070723 - It is not clear why the keyboard continued working. We may have
070724 - simply disturbed a bad connection enough for it to reconnect enough to
070725 - permit operation.
070726 -
070727 - Follow Up
070728 -
070729 - Mike asked me to continue working with this condition for awhile and
070730 - if the problem persists, to bring it in for him to fix.

Buffers
EMS (Expanded Memory System)
0908 - Progress
0909 -
090901 - Mike got this going for us.
090902 -
090903 - Mike said the extended memory statement does not require parameters
090904 - contrary to the representation in the Superlap Manual on page 6-10
090905 - (see work done at ref SDS 3 line 08090801. He had me enter a config
090906 - statement as follows:
090907 -
090908 - device=neatemm.sys
090909 -
090910 - Set-Up different
090911 -
090912 - Mike asked me to disable the "extended memory" configuration. After
090913 - we did this, the "expanded memory" spec was successfully processed on
090914 - start-up of the computer.
090915 -
090916 - We then assigned the entire amount of additional memory to "expanded"
090917 - memory. It uses "64 pages" of memory.
090918 -
090919 - Where is this requirement explained in the manual?
090920 -
090921 -
090922 - Buffers
090923 -
090924 - Mike did not have the information on the number of sectors per
090925 - cluster on the hard disk, but this information may be available
090926 - through Norton, or Check_It.
090927 -
09092701 - This evening I found this with Norton 5.0 under "Disk
09092002 - Characteristics." It says there are 4 sectors per cluster. Norton
09092003 - also reports DOS as 4.0, which evidentally is incorrect; at least
09092004 - "ver" returns 4.01
09092005 -
09092006 - This is somewhat significant because the Twinhead set up routine
09092007 - created the "8" value.
09092008 -
09092009 - Just for fun, changed the "m" param in the buffers statement from 8
09092010 - to 4, based on Morris' comment that this is an appropriate choice,
09092111 - see ref SDS 3 line 08090551.

0911 - Evaluation
0912 -
091201 - This seems to take more of the 640 KB of primary RAM, than not using
091202 - it. My objective was to be able to assign the config.sys buffers to
091203 - expanded memory under the /x option, so we would have more RAM
091204 - available for SDS.
091205 -
091206 - EMS Condition
091207 -
091208 - buffers = 30,8/x
091209 - files=20
091210 - device = neatemm.sys
091211 -
091212 - Chkdsk reports: 567904
091213 -
091214 -
091215 - Extended Memory
091216 -
091217 - buffers = 20,8
091218 - files=20
091219 -
091220 - Chkdsk reports: 575184
091221 -
091222 - Using
091223 -
091224 - buffers = 20,4
091225 -
091226 - Chkdsk reports: 577232
091227 -
091228 - Evidentally using expanded memory does not meet the objective of
091229 - gaining more use of the 640 KB.
091230 -
091231 - Each buffer requires 512 bytes. With 10 fewer buffers, the second
091232 - statement is still about 2 KB more, than the expanded memory
091233 - configuration.
091234 -
091235 - Therefore, I switched the thing back.
