0705 - Summary/Objective
0706 -
070601 - We left Chuck's place about 0900 and arrived in Jacksonville about
070602 - 1500, with about 2 hours lost to car trouble, see account below.
070603 -
070604 - Stopped for gas once and had lunch
070605 -
070606 - Will stay over in Jacksonville, and leave tomorrow afternoon after the
070607 - car is repaired.
070608 -
070609 - Mother made a delicious bannana cream pie. Mike barbacued steaks.
070610 - The children are delightful. Sally and Mike left about 1930 to
070611 - support a local youth group sponsored by their church.
070612 -
070613 - Worked with Mary Heather a little on the computer. She enjoyed the
070614 - reaction between striking keys and getting an instant response on the
070615 - monitor. We made a file for her to play around with.
070616 -
070617 - Will begin notes from the Seminar.

080402 - Car Problems in Medford
080403 -
080404 - As background, during the entire trip, and for the past few months
080405 - the car has been rattling when it climbs hills, but has otherwise
080406 - performed well. It was serviced in early April after we returned from
080407 - Montana. We asked Ellis Brooks Cheverlet to "tune" it but they said
080408 - this wasn't necessary.
080409 -
080410 - Today, about 170 miles after leaving Portland we began climbing. The
080411 - car overheated some 2 miles from the top of a hill and slowed consid-
080412 - erably. It seemed to loose compression, and/or simply power. The red
080413 - light flashed on the temperature gauge. We pulled over immediately
080414 - behind a parked fuel delivery truck.
080415 -
080416 - After about 20 minutes I got some water for the radiator
080417 - from a creek next to the road.
080418 -
080419 - The driver of the truck assisted us in evaluating the problem and
080420 - filling the radiator with water. The car has a system that causes
080421 - the overheated steam to be released into a plastic container. It was
080422 - still boiling after 20 minutes. The effluent appeared greasy and the
080423 - overflow from the release valve was also greasy which indicated there
080424 - may have been a breach between the oil and cooling systems.
080425 -
080426 - Oil dip stick showed full which indicated there was no excessive loss
080427 - of oil, as would be the case if it was leaking into the cooling
080428 - system.
080429 -
080430 - The truck driver was very helpful. He observed from the oil dip
080431 - stick that there was no evidence of water leaking into the oil
080432 - system. He felt there were no indications of failure to any major I
080433 - initially burned my wrist and forearm in removing the radiator cap.
080434 - Using his gloves, the truck driver got the cap off and filled the
080435 - radiator from a bucket he had filled from the adjacent creek.
080436 -
080437 - The driver suggested we could chance driving to the top of the hill,
080438 - which he estimated was only about two miles, and then we could likely
080439 - coast downhill about 4 miles to truck stop where the car could be
080440 - repaired. His CB radio was not in good enough working order to call
080441 - for assistance. So our only choices were to either walk the four
080442 - miles to the service station and request a tow, or attempt to drive
080443 - the car.
080444 -
080445 - We had gotten some experience during this discussion with the temper-
080446 - ature condition of the car. We turned it on and off several times
080447 - while filling the radiator, and the guage on both occassions did not
080448 - show the red warning light. Therefore, we decided to try his sug-
080449 - gestion of driving to the service station.
080450 -
080451 - We made it to the top of the hill driving in low gear. I noticed the
080452 - car did not rattle as it did when driving in "drive " and the red
080453 - light did not flash on the temperature guage. Going down the hill, I
080454 - put it in "drive" and drove normally. We didn't see the truck stop
080455 - as expected, and so kept going, but soon encountered another hill.
080456 - This time I used 2nd gear and stayed in the shoulder lane. We made
080457 - this rather long and steep hill without incident.
080458 -
080459 - We were about 50 miles from our destination. I decided to continue
080460 - in this manner unless the red warnning light appeared again. We
080461 - made our destination, and Sally called Mike at who recommended a
080462 - mechanic they have used.
080463 -
080464 - Send commendation to Company of Truck Driver.
080465 -
080466 - Millie thinks the name of the Company was Valley Oil Salem Oregon.
080467 -
080468 - We should write to the Salem papers and commend them for their
080469 - courtesy and assistance. Let him know we made it home okay.

0806 - Car repair
0807 -
080701 - Took car to: Harold Hinton Repair
080702 - 2840 Juniper Avenue
080703 - Central Point, OR 97502
080704 -
080705 - 503 773 6101
080706 -
080707 - Harold made a preliminary examination and concluded there is no
080708 - leakage between the cooling and oil systems.
080709 -
080710 - He believes the radiator fan clutch is not working correctly because
080711 - when the engine is hot, it should be engaged which would make the fan
080712 - difficult to turn. The fan was easy to turn, indicating the clutch
080713 - was defective.
080714 -
080715 - He also advised that he believes the engine needs tuning because a
080716 - cylinder is not functioning.
080717 -
080718 - Harold will call this evening with an opinion of his full findings
080719 - after the car cools enough for him to examine the radiator.
080720 -
080721 -
080722 - 1930 Harold called
080723 -
080724 - He believes the radiator clutch is the main problem. I asked if
080725 - defective performance of this component would typically result in
080726 - water boiling over in to the overflow basin. He said this would be
080727 - expected.
080728 -
080729 - This repair is about $60.
080730 -
080731 - Harold believes the radiator needs cleaning but that we could
080732 - likely drive to SF in the present condition. He feels this problem
080733 - did not cause the overheating we experienced today, but did
080734 - contribute to it. In other words, if the fan clutch was working
080735 - properly, the car would probably not have overheated.
080736 -
080737 - The cost of doing the cleanup on this is about $90.
080738 -
080739 - The tune up is about $50, or $60.
080740 -
080741 - He said the entire job, including cleaning the radiator can be
080742 - completed by 1400 tomorrow. Therefore, I gave notice to proceed
080743 - with all three items, at the approximate total cost of $210.

090502 -
090503 - 1 Large package banana instant pudding
090504 - 2 3/4 Cups milk
090505 - 1 pint whipped cream, whipped
090506 - 2 tablespoons sugar
090507 - 2 teaspoons vanilla
090508 - 5 sliced bananas

090514 - Prepare pudding according to package. Refrigerate 15 minutes. Add
090515 - sugar and vanilla to whipped cream, fold into pudding, reserving one
090516 - cup. Slice five bananas piling as much pudding as possible into pie
090517 - shells. Refrigerate the rest for 15 minutes. Mound the remaining
090518 - pudding onto pie. Spoon one cup whipped cream into center of pie.
090519 - Arange pecans, Kiwis and one sliced banana in center and around edges
090520 - of pie. Serve immediately. Serves eight.
090521 -
090522 - It may need a little less of something or more of something else
090523 - because the consistancy was not thick enough.
