Yosemite Half-Dome Hike 13 Hours Reached Top With Lindsey Brady Guid
-
- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS A3 0000. ref SDS 85 0000.
-
- Successful test today, hiking about 2/3rds of Half Dome trail. Got up
- early and drove from Concord to Yosemite. ref SDS 0 NM6V Arrived at
- Curry Village about 0720. Hiked 1+ miles on Happy Isle Loop Road a
- mile to the tailhead, ref SDS 0 RH7K, then up the paved trail another
- mile to the Wood Bridge. ref SDS 0 ZW9K There was lots of white water
- roaring through the Merced River gorgue from Vernal Falls. ref SDS 0
- WX5M For the first time in memory there was a lot of mist on the Mist
- trail today. ref SDS 0 E15F Met Giesla hiking to the top of Half
- Dome. ref SDS 0 5N8O Handled steep, complex steps up the trail better
- than last year. ref SDS 0 E26F At the top of Vernal Falls lots of
- people were enjoying the spectacle of much higher flows over the falls
- this year. ref SDS 0 TW6L From Vernal Falls took the steeper, shorter
- Mist trail rather than the John Muir Trail (JMT) up to Nevada Falls.
- ref SDS 0 6Q63 From Nevada Falls, continued up JMT to Little Yosemite
- Valley. ref SDS 0 QC9H Stopped to rest and eat lunch. ref SDS 0 PW4L
- Continued through Little Yosemite Valley, and for about a mile up the
- Long Switchbacks keeping Giesla company on her first attempt hiking
- Half Dome. ref SDS 0 SS4G Returned to Nevada Falls and got pictures
- of white water rapids in the Merced River. ref SDS 0 GV4N Left knee
- hurting, so took flatter JMT back to the valley. Got a rare picture
- of water gushing over Nevada Falls. ref SDS 0 SW44 Made it down JMT
- to the Wood Bridge, where there was a crowd enjoying the unusual scene
- of white water flowing under the bridge down the Merced river to the
- Valley below. ref SDS 0 TF96 After hiking down the paved trail to the
- trailhead, got lost taking the wrong trail back to Curry Village.
- Finally arrived back where the hike started this morning. ref SDS 0
- JJ3M Kathy had lots to drink for rehydrating. She drove us home.
- ref SDS 0 CD4I Test hike was fun today. On track to reach top of
- Half Dome scheduled on 190911, after final PRP treatment for feet and
- knees on 190816. ref SDS 0 S14I

-
- Follow up ref SDS A3 NM6V, ref SDS 85 NM6V.
-
- Up early this morning, planning test hike to above Nevada Falls in
- Yosemite Valley. Evaluate conditioning and physical ability to hike
- Half Dome scheduled on 190911.
- ..
- For some reason cellphone alarm did not go off. Must have not
- actually set it. Woke up at 0240.
- ..
- Getting organized for driving to Yosemite with Kathy.
-
- 1. Wear Brooks Ghost shoes with Satallite Elite orthotic inserts
- and heel cushions, with 2 pair Thorlo Wool socks, which were
- successful hiking Half Dome trail last year on 180912 0545.
- ref SDS A3 CW9L Also wore these shoes getting to top of Half
- Dome on 160914 0530, ref SDS 85 CW9L, and for test hike 3 weeks
- earlier on 160825 0143. ref SDS 83 CW9L Daily hiking is
- normally done wearing Hoka Bondi 6 2E wide shoes, because they
- have thicker soles made of well cushioned material that
- protects feet from metatarsalgia injuries walking and running
- extended miles on concrete and asphault surfaces. Wore similar
- Hoka Stinson Trail shoes with VA Prolab orthotic inserts
- attempting to reach top of Half Dome on 150916. ref SDS 66 CW9L
- Fell on Mist trail near top of Nevada Falls. ref SDS 66 O87H,
- This may have been partly due to extra thickness of Hoka shoes.
- So today, wearing Brooks Ghost with normal thin sole thickness
- that provides stronger stability on rocky terraine.
- ..
- 2. Extra pair socks.
-
- Actually forgot to do this.
- ..
- 3. Take backpack purchased at Walmart on 180711 1525, ref SDS 92
- 6M6G
- ..
- 4. Socks - forgot to put an extra pair in backpack in case feet
- get wet.
- ..
- 5. Coat put in backpack just in case get stuck coming back and
- temperature gets cold.
- ..
- 6. Gloves put in backpack for climbing up the cables, which is not
- actually planned for today.
- ..
- 7. Hydrocodone pills put in backpack (actually Hydrocodone 5mg
- with Acetaminophen 325 mg - commonly Norco) to take in the
- afternoon, on the way back, if necessary to treat repetitive
- stress injuries. Did this previously at Nevada Falls on the
- way down from top of Half Dome, reported last year on 180912
- 0545. ref SDS A3 GV4N Two years earlier, took Naproxen after
- getting down the Sub Dome switchbacks on 160914 0530.
- ref SDS 85 VN6I
- ..
- 8. Medication - Kathy always carries in per purse Famotidine and
- Pantoprazole pills. Will take Famotidine after we arrive in
- Yosemite, and before starting hike OA 0700. Will take
- pantoprazole pill in the evening when we stop for dinner on the
- drive home, reported in case study for today on 190101 0730.
- ref SDS B4 TT9K
- ..
- 9. Empty collapsable bottle with a filter put in backpack. Plan
- to drink from the fountain at the Wood Bridge, and carry empty
- water bottle up to Vernal Falls, then Nevada Falls. This will
- reduce weight ascending steepest climbs, and reduce fatigue.
- Will hike into Little Yosemite Valley and fill the water bottle
- at Merced River. Will drink sparingly until reaching little
- spring near top of Long Switchbacks. On the way back will fill
- the bottle again at Merced River, like Lindsey did last year,
- reported on 180912 0545. ref SDS A4 GV4N This will be enough
- water to reach Wood Bridge where there is running water in a
- fountain.
- ..
- 10. Billfold always carry in case identification is needed in
- relation to falling, injury etc.
- ..
- 11. Cellphone for communication, taking pictures, video.
- ..
- Backpack had minimal weight, yet still felt heavy on the trail -
- rediculous.

- Driving to Yosemite Valley
-
- Leave house in Concord driving to Curry Village in Yosemite Valley.
-
- Took regular route - Marsh Creek Road in Clayton, which eventually
- changes to Camino Diablo where Marsh Creek road makes a 90 degree
- bend North and intersets Highway 4 and Vasco.
- ..
- We turned off Camino Diablo onto Vasco and took it to Highway 580. We
- could have continued on Camino Diablo to Byron Highway, and taken it
- to Highway 205, which seems much shorter than the Vasco route. We
- returned on this shorter route taking Byron Road
- ..
- Drove on 580 to Tracy, where it continues as Highway 205, which we
- took, rather than continue on 580 going South to merge with Highway 5
- going South to Los Angeles.
- ..
- On Highway 205 we merged onto Highway 5 going North, but only for
- about a mile.
- ..
- Turned off Highway 5 onto highway 120 going East for only a few
- miles, then turned onto Highway 99 going North but only for about 1
- mile to Manteca.
- ..
- At Manteca, turned off Highway 99 back on to highway 120 continuing
- East toward Yosemite.
- ..
- Drove to Escalon, then to Oakdale, where highway 120 merges with
- highway 108. Stopped at McDonald's at East end of Oakdale. Had
- Egg McMuffin, or something like that.
- ..
- Drove East 40 - 50 miles where highway 120 and 108, split. Highway
- 108 contineus North East. We turned right taking highway 120 South
- East toward Yosemite.
- ..
- Drove past Chinese Camp, then past Lake Don Pedro Reservoir. It was
- too dark to see much of the reservoir. Drove into the mountains on an
- extremely winding road, and then into Groveland.
- ..
- Drove on highway 120 to Yosemite Park entrance. The Ranger Station
- was unmanned, so just drove into the park.
- ..
- Drove through the 3 tunnels and merged with highway 140 coming from
- Merced. We were then in Yosemite Valley driving along the Merced
- river. Noticed immediately that water in the river was much higher
- than on any of the previous 10 or so trips the past 10 years.
- ..
- Drove on Southside drive directly to Camp Curry.

- Hiked about 1 mile from Curry Village on Happy Isle Loop Road.
- Crossed Happy Isles Bridge. Took access path along Merced River to
- the Trailhead on the John Muir trail (JMT), which is the route to
- Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls and Half Dome, Clouds Rest, etc.
- ..
- Continued up the trail that follows the Merced river. This section is

- ..
- Last year on the hike to top of Half Dome, took us 46 minutes from
- Curry Village to reach the Wood Bridge, reported on 180912 0545.
- ref SDS 95 J13H
- ..
- Drank from the water fountain at the Wood Bridge, but did not use
- water spigots to fill the filtered water bottle. This reduces weight
- to carry up the steep Mist trail to Vernal Falls, and then to Nevada
- Falls. Will fill the water bottle and drink some at the Merced River
- in Little Yosemite Valley above Nevada Falls, per above. ref SDS 0
- 3Y3M At this time of the morning, temperature is mild in the 60s, so
- don't need to drink until reaching the river.
- ..
- Amazed by amount of water flowing under the bridge this morning, and

- even see water in the Merced river, shown on 180912 0545. ref SDS A4

- Mist Trail from Wood Bridge Steep Narrow Rock Steps to Vernal Falls
-
- Follow up ref SDS A3 6Q97, ref SDS 85 6Q97.
-
- After crossing the Wood Bridge, the South side trail changes markedly
- for the remaining .7 miles up to Vernal Falls. A few hundred feet or
- so past the bridge the trail divides at "Register Rock P." The Mist
- trail hugs the vertical cliff of the Merced river gourge. A sign
- identifies the trailhead for the flatter and longer John Muir Trail
- (JMT) also to Vernal Falls, and on up to Nevada Falls, and then to
- Half Dome. The longer JMT trail has many switchbacks. The Mist trail
- has no switchbacks and so is much more vertical.
- ..
- Today, took the shorter, steeper Mist trail to Vernal Falls.
- ..
- This year and for the first time ever beginning with the hike in 2013,
- there was actual mist on the trail. On the hike with Ross in 1994,
- similarly there was no mist on the Mist trail. ref SDS 2 6702
- ..
- There has been a lot reporting that Yosemite and California generally
- had very high rain and snow last winter. For the first time in a long
- time, all of the reservoirs are full of water. At the VA in May,
- Doctor Lee said a relative or friend reported having recently returned
- from Yosemite. He saw water flowing from high cliffs all around
- Yosemite Valley, reported during EGD Dilation procedure on 190521
- 0930. ref SDS B4 BJ5I
- ..
- Today, in July the amount of water flowing over Vernal Falls is
- awesome. Pictures show all white water, which have never seen at this
- level on 10 or so previous trips to Yosemite...
-

-
-
-
-
-
-
- ..
-
-
-
- ..
- Much of the Mist trail is very steep, solid granite rock steps are
- formed from large, irregular stones. The route takes strength and
- endurance to climb, but also mental focus (concentration) to step
- correctly ascending the trail of irregular steps up to Vernal Falls.
- Steps vary from 6" to over 18+" in height. At several places the path
- narrows to less than 3'. There is a short span of metal railing at
- the narrowest point on the trial. This reduces danger of bumping the
- verticle cliff on the right side and falling off the cliff into the
- gourge on the left.
- ..
- Today, stopped 3 or 4 times to rest and take pictures hiking up to
- Vernal Falls.
- ..
- Apart from conditioning, young people handle these conditions well;
- however, older people can be hesitant with loss of physical and mental
- agility, i.e., advancing neurological/congnitive deficits. Aging
- causes plaque buildup in blood vessels that reduces blood flow. This
- reduces strength (sarcopenia) and slows mental processing. As a
- result, advancing age increases risk of missteps, falling, and injury
- due to frailty. This makes the hike to Half Dome a good medical
- metric.
- ..
- On 190411 1500 Doctor Anthony Mefford and colleagues at UCSF are
- studying cognitive impairment with aging. ref SDS B6 8X4L Hiking the
- Mist trail and on up, then coming back down, tests navigating complex
- terraine under high fatigue conditions at age 70+.
- ..
- Last year, hiking Half Dome, about half way up the Mist trail, I
- faltered slightly making an elevated step. Lindsey put her hand on my
- back to slightly push me forward, reported on 180912 0545, ref SDS A3
- BD4L Today, was fine all the way up to Vernal Falls with no issues,
- reflecting better conditioning from increased hiking.
- ..
- This year mist is so heavy, that going through the approximate 12'
- long rock tunnel about halfway up the trail to Vernal Falls, water was
- falling like heavy rain. This formed a huge puddle on the rock
- walking surface. Getting through the tunnel without stepping in 4 - 6
- inches of water required jumping between 3 or 4 rocks that protruded
- slightly above the water.
- ..
- Lana would be proud that today, I nimbly navigated this part of the
- trail, getting through the tunnel without falling in the water. This
- avoided previous fall, when we hiked Castle Rock Park a few years ago
- on 160501, reported in case study on 160101 0700. ref SDS 66 YS8N
- That fall led to examination that diagnosed BPPV dizziness symptoms,

- flatter and easier with less rocks and more normal walking surface
- going slightly downhill into Little Yosemite Valley.
- ..
- Along the trail Giesla explained she is hiking to the top of Half

- invited a family member (a brother I think) and/or a friend to hike
- with her. However, ultimately nobody else could come, so she is
- attempting her first Half Dome hike alone.

- Giesla said she will not push beyond her limits to reach the top of

- Giesla seemed to say she would be interested in hiking Half Dome
- again in September.
- ..
- She also plans to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. Mentioned that I have
- hiked Half Dome several times with a guide, Lindsey, from the Yosemite
- Mountaineering School and Guide Service. Lindsey reported hiking 250
- miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, shown in the record on 150916 0535.

- ..
- We stopped to eat about 15% of the way through Little Yosemite Valley.
- ..
- Last year Lindsey guided us to the Merced River about 100 yards from
- the trail. Today, I wandered around and eventually found a location
- where the filtered water bottle could be filled. Was a little
- concerned that at this particular location the water seemed relatively
- still. Recalled Lindsey saying to fill the bottle where the water was
- running swiftly. From where we were standing, there was an immediate
- obvious location.
- ..
- Looking at the bank, it seemed risky for me. Giesla offered to bend
- down and fill the bottle. She did this easily...
-
-
-
-
- ..
- We then sat to eat and rest. I didn't bring anything to eat because
- planned to return to the Valley on reaching this point on the Half
- Dome Trail.
- ..
- Giesla did eat. She commented on her backback seeming heavier now
- after carrying enough water to make Half Dome, and having hiked the
- past 5 miles.
- ..
- Explained there is a little stream several miles uphill, and before
- reaching the Sub Dome switchbacks, reported in the record hiking Half
- Dome last year on 180912 0545. ref SDS A3 XC4M
- ..
- This little stream makes it is possible to carry much less water over
- the entire route, by only taking enough to get from the Wood Bridge to
- the river here in Little Yosemite Valley, where water can be refilled.
- In 2016, Lindsey carried a lot of water like Giesla today. She got to
- the top of Half Dome, but also got sick on the way down. Last year,
- she carried less water, because she refilled at the little streem,
- before going up the Sub Dome switchbacks and the cables to the top of
- Half Dome. She refilled again, after we came back down to the little
- stream. This significantly reduces the weight to carry, and so
- reduces fatigue.
- ..
- Think Giesla said she is 24, about same age Lindsey was when we first
- hiked together on 150916 0535. ref SDS 66 UH6J
- ..
- Giesla works as an auditor for Marriot Hotels, and graduated from I
- think Long Beach State.
- ..
- Asked if she has seen the movie "The Accountant" with Ben Afleck?
- ..
- She hasn't seen the movie.
-
- ..
- Giesla explained plans to spend a year, maybe more, working in Central
- America with an environmental expert. Last year or the year before,
- she worked on the same environmental project for 3 months, and so
- wants to continue.
- ..
- Seems rather coincidental that Lindsey has a strong interest in
- environmental issues, and has hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, and that
- Giesla somehow joined up with me today, and has the same interests.
- So, wondered if Lindsey asked Giesla to come along with me for safety.
- That would be considerate and generous. Lindsey received a copy of
- the letter to Bethany on getting examination at the VA for BPPV
- (dizziness). The letter related plans for a test hike; however, it
- did not have a date for the hike today, reported on 190701 0829.
- ref SDS B9 RS5F So, not clear how Lindsey could have arranged for
- Giesla to just inadvertently encounter me on the Mist trail this
- morning.
- ..
- After resting for about 20 minutes, decided to continue up the trail
- with Giesla, through Little Yosemite Valley.
- ..
- Hiking through this small valley is mostly flat for about half-mile,
- but very sandy. It is marked by small diameter logs on both sides. A
- path has been formed by hikers on the edge of the main trail because
- firmer soil makes walking easier. This conserves energy. You have to
- step over a few logs along the way that traverse the path and not the
- main trail. These logs are mostly less than 2' in diameter, so this
- is easier than walking in the sand.

- soil some of the way with shrubs, some grass, here and there, a lot of
- trees, and also open space, where you can see across to other mountain
- ranges. This uphill is 4 miles of continual switchbacks going up to
- the backside of Half Dome. The trail is less steep than the Mist
- trail to Vernal and Nevada Falls, but there are no cliffs to steady
- and assist in pulling the body uphill. Switchbacks vary from about 10
- - 50+ yards. There are many locations where footing is difficult due
- to irregular, rocky ground conditions.
- ..
- Pointed out to Giesla the spot where a helicopter landed with fresh

- ..
- We hiked up the Long Switchbacks about a mile. Then told Giesla I had
- to return to the Valley. If I went on up with her to attempt reaching
- the top of Half Dome today, we would get back very late, i.e., after
- 8pm. There is no cellphone service, so cannot call Kathy to let her
- know I decided to go on up to the top today. She would be very
- worried not hearing from me. We don't have a room to stay in the
- Valley tonight, so she would have difficulty filling the time until I
- returned. As well, we plan to drive home today. I would be too tired
- to drive, and it would be too late for Kathy to drive that distance
- back to Concord.
- ..
- Thanked Giesla for hiking with me, and wished her well on reaching the
- top of Half Dome. Cautioned that going all the way up, will mean
- returning in the dark, which presents a high risk situation, along
- with fatigue. She will need a headlamp - didn't ask if she has one.

- not take the picture, if she continued getting closer to the edge of

- pictures we took came out the way she wanted. I was pleased not to be
- part of another disasterous fall reported in Yosemite.

-
- Called Kathy. She only made it halfway up the Mist trail to the Wood
- Bridge, but she had a good time exploring the Valley today. Will meet
- at the pizza and bar place behind the main Curry Village commercial
- area. Should be there in about 35 minutes.

- Hydrocodone pill began to take effect, so headed back down to the
- Valley. Leaving the Wood Bridge the trail is paved, but initially
- goes uphill for about 200 yards. This is disappointing, but have to
- do it, despite severe fatigue.

- As well, despite hydrocodoen pill left knee hurt all the way down the
