- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 85 0000. ref SDS 66 0000.
-
- Reached top of Half Dome 3rd time in 5 years. Hiked from Curry
- Village to Happy Isle, then to the Trailhead. Going up the paved Mist
- Trail to the Wood Bridge took 30 minutes. ref SDS 0 MY4F Took steeper
- Mist Trail to Vernal Falls, rather than easier, but longer John Muir
- Trail. ref SDS 0 6Q97 Lindsey helped avoid a fall. Less water going
- over the falls, but still spectacular. ref SDS 0 BD4L Continued
- across Merced river up the Mist Trail to Nevada Falls. ref SDS 0 6Q63
- Took John Muir Trail into Little Yosemite Valley. Replenished water
- from Merced River, and ate food. ref SDS 0 M69J Hiked through Little
- Yosemite Valley, then uphill on the Long Switchbacks. About 70%
- through this trail, stopped at a small spring to refill water
- supplies. ref SDS 0 XC4M Then reached Sub-Dome switchbacks. Very
- difficult, but did this better than 2 years ago. ref SDS 0 DF4J
- Ascended cables about 700' to top of Half Dome going hand-over-hand on
- one cable. ref SDS 0 GS3H Biceps and quadriceps cramped about 70% of
- the way up. Switched to using both cables. This worked to reach the
- top. ref SDS 0 G89F Doing Half Dome again was satisfying overcoming
- medical problems the past 2 years. ref SDS 0 O58K After resting,
- eating, making calls, and taking pictures, ref SDS 0 WV3M, descended
- down the cables back to the Sub-Dome. ref SDS 0 V44G Had one
- near-fall coming down Sub-Dome switchbacks, but otherwise handled it
- well. ref SDS 0 BH5F Long switchbacks took less time going down. We
- helped another hiker suffering duress in the heat. On reaching Little
- Yosemite Valley, rested at the Ranger Station. ref SDS 0 2E8L At
- Nevada Falls took John Muir Trail back to the Valley. Nearly ran down
- much of this trail racing the setting sun back to the Wood Bridge.
- Hiked the paved trail down to the trailhead and on to Happy Isle - by
- then it was totally dark in the Valley. Followed the roadway about a
- mile back to Camp curry. ref SDS 0 SW44 We met Kathy and Lindsey's
- friend for congratulatory drinks and pizza. Seems a significant
- metric of good care at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco

- ..
- Much of this Mist trail is very steep, solid granite rock steps are
- formed from large, irregular stones. The route takes strength and
- endurance to climb, but also mental focus (concentration) to step
- correctly ascending the trail of irregular steps up to Vernal Falls.
- Steps vary from 6" to over 18" in height and width. At several places
- the path narrows to less than 4'. A metal railing reduces danger of

- This cable aspect of the hike makes Half Dome rated 1 of the 10 most
- difficult hikes in the world. Some people "tie-off" on the cables
- moving from one stanchion to the next, every 10 feet apart. A great
- many become fearful, even crying as they get into the ascent, but more
- often descending, because in coming down the cables people are looking
- down and so are visually more aware of severe adverse prospects from
- falling, i.e., fear of heights is more acute on the way down.
- ..
- An unexpected challenge is slippery surface of the granite rock, made
- more so by the many people who literally polish the surface with their
- shoes going up and down the cables everyday. Initially it is more
- than discerning feeling feet slip against the rock surface. This is
- solved by adjusting the angle of feet and legs to press more
- horizontally against the curvature of the rock. However, this
- increases pressure on hands and arms. Favorable grip strength and
- bicep strength-to-weight ratio make pulling the body 700' up the
- cables a daunting adventure. These conditions cause some, who reach
- the top of the Sub-Dome, to avoid or turn back on attempting the
- cables.
- ..
- Today, I ascended the cables much better/faster than in 2013. At that
- time, using both cables had to rest at almost every 10' stanchion
- section, sometimes for as much as 5 minutes before climbing up to the
- next stanchion. ref SDS 31 6H9L Better gloves today, made the ascent
- faster than in 2013.
- ..
- Did not need any long rest stops today, but about 70% of the way up
- bicep and quadracep cramps occurred. For a moment thought I might not
- be able to continue, because each time I pulled on the cable, the arms
- cramped. Tried switching from climbing hand-over-hand on one (1)
- cable, to using both cables. This changed stress on the arms and legs

- lowering body weight with triceps. This works best for me using both
- cables. Equally going up and down there is minimal footing. Hand
- grip is crucial. There is a big difference between pulling body
- weight up, which takes much more energy than lowering body weight
- down. This makes going down easier, however, there may be a greater
- fear for some experiencing acrophobia looking down.
- ..
- Going down the cables was slow, with many delays from people clogged

- difficult due to fatigue. All the way down, getting to the top of the
- Sub-Dome began to seem impossible, despite having descended it earlier
- in the day. Probably the angle of sight coming vertically down the
- cables makes the continuing slope up the Sub-Dome seem steeper than it
- is.
- ..
- Fortunately, turned out this was a lot easier than expected.
- ..
- We rested for a few minutes at the bottom of the cables. Two hikers
- walking by, a young man and woman, asked if gloves are needed to go up

- ..
- After resting, we chose the John Muir Trail (JMT), rather than the
- steeper Mist Trail for heading back to the Valley. JMT is longer, but
- flatter and so less risky for tired legs. Lots of people take the

- ..
- Despite being flatter overall, there are a great many steps on JMT
