- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 66 0000. ref SDS 60 0000.
-
- Met Lindsey at 0545. We hiked to Happy Isle, then to the Trailhead.
- Hiked on the steep, paved Mist Trail to the Wood Bridge in 35 minutes.
- ref SDS 0 WX5M Continued on stone steps and much steeper Mist Trail
- to Vernal Falls. ref SDS 0 6Q97 Continued on Mist Trail to Nevada
- Falls without incident, and better than 3 weeks ago during training
- hike. ref SDS 0 6Q63 Took John Muir Trail into Little Yosemite
- Valley. Filled water bottles from Merced River, and ate some food.
- ref SDS 0 M69J Hiked through Little Yosemite Valley, then uphill on
- the Long Switchbacks. ref SDS 0 C45M Tired and so had to rest
- frequently. Lindsey noted Sub-Dome switchbacks and ascending the
- cables to top of Half Dome will be more difficult. Discussed ending
- hike and returning in order to avoid injury. Decided to continue.
- ref SDS 0 RN4N Eventually, reached Sub-Dome switchbacks; they were
- very difficult. Lost balance at the top for a brief moment.
- Lindsey's steadying hand saved the day. ref SDS 0 DF4J Ascended
- cables to top of Half Dome better than in 2013, due to better gloves,
- and went up on one cable, rather than using both cables. ref SDS 0
- GS3H Top of Half Dome was awesome, beyond description. ref SDS 0 O58K
- After resting, eating and taking pictues, ref SDS 0 NL66, descended
- back down the cables to the Sub-Dome. ref SDS 0 V44G Near fall hiking
- down Sub-Dome switchbacks, but otherwise handled it well. Took 2 more
- Naproxen pills for feet pain. ref SDS 0 BH5F Long switchbacks took
- less time going down, but seemed longer, because of fewer stops to
- rest. On reaching Little Yosemite Valley, we rested at the Ranger
- Station. ref SDS 0 2E8L At Nevada Falls took John Muir Trail back to
- the Valley. Nearly ran down much of this trail racing the setting
- sun, but lost as darkness enveloped Yosemite. Slipped on a sandy rock
- and fell, but no injury. Lindsey used a headlamp to guide the rest of
- the way to the end of the trail, and back to Camp Curry. ref SDS 0
- SW44 We met Kathy for congratulatory drink. Conquering Half Dome at
- age 71, proved a significant medical metric of physical and neurologic

- since there are few street lights. The road from Yosemite Lodge to

- into Little Yosemite Valley, was completed without difficulties,
- reported on 160825 0143. ref SDS 83 HF4O This indicated good chances
- of avoiding injuries today, that occurred during the hike to Half Dome
- last year on 150916 0535. ref SDS 66 O87H
- ..
- Kathy drove us about .25 miles to a stop sign. We then walked to
- Happy Isle, and across the bridge to the access path for the
- trailhead, about .5 miles. Turned and walked along the Merced river
- to the trailhead, another .25 miles from the road. Then started the
- hike to Half Dome, going up the Mist trail, as done previously hiking

- Follow up ref SDS 66 WX5M, ref SDS 60 WX5M.
-
- The first mile of the Mist trail is paved and steep, winding along on
- the North side of the Merced river gourge.
- ..
- Did not carry water initially, since there are water fountains at the
- Wood Bridge.
- ..
- Took about 35 minutes to reach the bridge. This was 5 minutes longer
- than last year. There is a water station with 2 drinking fountains,
- and 2 water spouts for filling water bottles. There is also a
- building for a Ranger Station and restrooms.
- ..
- Drank at the Wood Bridge, but did not fill the water bottle in order
- to reduce weight to carry up the steep Mist trail to Vernal Falls, and
- then to Nevada Falls. Plan for water is to fill the filtered water
- bottle at the Merced River above Nevada Falls, and into Little
- Yosemite Valley. This will provide enough water to reach the top of
- Half Dome, and return to the Merced River to fill the bottle again.
-
-
- ..
- Vernal Falls Took Mist Trail Steep Narrow Stone Steps from Wood Bridge

-
- After crossing the bridge, the South side trail changes markedly for
- the remaining .7 miles up to Vernal Falls. A hundred feet or so past
- the bridge the trail divides at "Register Rock P." The Mist trail hugs
- the vertical cliff of the Merced river gourge. A sign identifies the
- trailhead for the flatter and longer John Muir Trail (JMT) also to
- Vernal Falls.
- ..
- Took the shorter, steeper Mist trail to Vernal Falls.
- ..
- Lindsey hiked behind, so in case balance falters going up the steep
- trail, she could prevent an actual fall backwards.
- ..
- About a third of the way up to Vernal Falls told Lindsey was glad she
- was available for guide service today, since this past year there were
- numerous medical issues that had to be solved in order to attempt the
- hike today.
- ..
- She asked what happened?
- ..
- Explained continual metatarsalgia feet injuries, and osteoarthritis
- knee injuries that curtailed training at the level needed for 71-year
- old to reach the top of Half Dome. Additionally, tore right knee MCL
- on 160622, reported in case study on 160101 0700. ref SDS 72 RN9N
- After the knee healed, tore MCL again 3 weeks later on 160715.
- ref SDS 72 PQSX MRI on 160805, found multiple fractures of right leg
- tibia and fibula chondral. ref SDS 80 DR55 On 160617, diagnosed with
- stroke, following EGD dilation medical procedure on 160617 1637.
- ref SDS 77 5F6F EGD dilation procedures were needed to maintain
- swallowing for nutrition.
- ..
- These issues reduced training and conditioning averaging only 4.7
- miles per day, instead of normally hiking 9.5 miles per day, shown in
- the spreadsheet...

- Much of this Mist trail is very steep, solid granite rock steps are
- formed from large, irregular stones. The route takes strength and
- endurance to climb, but also mental focus (concentration) to step
- correctly ascending the trail of irregular steps up to Vernal Falls.
- Steps vary from 6" to over 18" in height and width. At several places
- the path narrows to less than 3'. A metal railing reduces danger of
- bumping the verticle cliff on the right side and falling off the cliff
- into the gourge on the left.

- Apart from conditioning, young people handle these conditions well;
- however, older people can be hesitant with loss of physical and mental
- agility. Aging causes plaque buildup in blood vessels that slows and
- reduces blood flow, which then slows mental processing. As a result,

- trees, and also open space, where you can see across to other mountain
- ranges. This uphill is 4 miles of continual switchbacks going up the
- backside of Half Dome. The trail is less steep than Vernal and Nevada
- Falls, but there are no cliffs to steady and assist in pulling the
- body uphill. Switchbacks vary from about 10 - 50 yards. There are
- many locations where footing is difficult due to irregular, rocky
- ground conditions.
- ..
- Now, 4 hours into the hike, fatigue became a problem. After about a
- mile going continually uphill, had to stop and rest seemed like every
- 5 - 10 minutes. We were passed numerous times along the trail by
- other groups of hikers. Legs cramped - both calves and quadraceps.
- Balance became wobbly on this stretch. Dehydration from limited water
- could have been a factor. Fatugue was due mostly to lack of
- conditioning caused by injuries to feet and knees, and by stroke
- symptoms that prevented training, per above. ref SDS 0 Q14H
- ..
- Lindsey commented that difficulties hiking the long switchbacks

- She noted the sub-dome switchbacks will be much more difficult. Then

- As we progressed slower and slower up the mountain, Lindsey asked
- several more times about ending the hike, as the safer course of
- action. She cited the fall last year, and maintained that getting
- back in one piece today, having ascended to Vernal Falls and Nevada
- Falls, and over halfway to Half Dome demonstrates good physical and
- neurological function.
- ..
- Since we were 2/3rds to .75 of way to the top, decided to continue.
- Another factor was friends, relatives and doctors in cardiology,
- neurology, primary care, wound care, GI, i.e., everyone, urged against
- doing this hike, as too difficult and dangerous at age 71. Under the
- circumstances, short of death, quitting wasn't an option. Besides
- there was curiosity to see if it could be done? Despite limited
- training this year due to medical maladies, training in 2013, when the
- top of Half Dome was reached for the 1st time at age 68, was about the
- same as this year. Had trained hard in 2014 and 2015, so seemed like
- it should be possible, even in light of professional cautions.
- ..
- About halfway going up the Long Switchbacks someone coming down asked
- if we had permits for the cables?
- ..
- Later, another person coming down said we will need permits to go up
- the cables to the top of Half Dome. Since cable permits were received
- on 160428 1154, ref SDS 76 HI9J, we were ready.
- ..
- Somewhere along the route of these Long Switchbacks, there was

- trees are growing. You can look up and see Half Dome in the
- distance, but not the cables. They are on the other side.
- ..
- Looking across the gourge there is unique rock formation called
- "Clouds Rest." Several huge rocks at the top of a formation are
- rolled/curved giving the impression of clouds in the sky.
- ..
- We rested here for about 10 minutes, then started up the sub-dome
- switchbacks.
- ..
- Interestingly, there was no Park Ranger to verify we had permits for
- using the Half Dome cables, as there was previously on 130918 0620.

- The sub-dome switchbacks are much more difficult than ascending the
- Mist Trail to Vernal Falls and to Nevada Falls, explained in the
- record above. ref SDS 0 WR58 Moreover, Lindsey was totally correct
- saying difficulties ascending the long switchbacks, per above,
- ref SDS 0 RN4N, are signficantly greater doing the sub-dome
- switchbacks.
- ..
- Obviously, the body is tired from the climb to get here.
- ..
- This trail is steeper and narrower than the Mist trail. There are
- very few cliffs to use hands for balance steadying the body from one
- step to the next. Fatigue invites error, compounding risks hiking up
- these switchbacks. Had to maintain balance on the steep, narrow trail
- as other hikers pass by going up or coming down the trail. Stopped to
- rest frequently, simply sitting on the step above. As fatigue and
- balance deficits increased, simply bent over and placed hands on the
- steps above, effectively crawling up steps a few at a time, then
- resting before doing another few steps. In all this effort, Lindsey
- was only a few steps ahead, and observing to lend assistance, if
- needed.
- ..
- Finally reached the top of the sub-dome steps. Lindsey was about 10
- yards ahead. The sub-dome granite rock curves, so it is necessary to
- walk up this slope without benefit of steps. Doctor Wiseman remedied
- BPPV vertigo balance problems, using the Epley maneuver to restore
- calcified crystals from the semi-circle balance rings to the
- vestibular chambers near both ears, reported on 160707 0900.
- ref SDS 78 414G However, despite this medical remedy, maintaining
- balance on a curved slope requires strength, which elevated fatigue
- eviscerates. At this point fatigue was very high, so there was
- concern, actually fear, about maintaining balance on standing up.
- Somehow, set fear aside and stood up vertical. keeping head level for
- balance, walked up the slope.
- ..
- On reaching Lindsey, seemed to tip slightly when the right leg buckled
- due to fatigue. Lindsey grabbed my arm, while I quickly regained
- balance. Good teamwork.
- ..
- These conditions make ascending the Sub-Dome switchbacks the most
- difficult part of hiking Half Dome. There are no balance problems
- doing the cables, because with a strong grip the cables provide a
- stable anchor for making the ascent. Of course the cables present
- other problems, e.g., strength, fear of heights looking down, lack of
- footing, so many would say they are the most difficult part of the

- ..
- This cable aspect of the hike makes Half Dome rated 1 of the 10 most
- difficult hikes in the world. Some people "tie-off" on the cables
- moving from one stanchion to the next, every 10 feet apart. A great
- many become fearful, even crying as they get into the ascent, but more
- often descending, because in coming down the cables people are looking
- down and so are visually more aware of severe adverse prospects from
- falling, i.e., fear of heights is more acute on the way down.
- ..
- An unexpected challenge is the slippery surface of the granite rock,
- made more so by the many people who literally polish the surface going
- up and down the cables everyday. With focus this is overcome, but
- initially it is discerning feeling feet slip against the rock surface.
- This is solved by adjusting the angle of feet and legs to press more
- horizontally to the curvature of the rock. However, this increases
- pressure on hands and arms. Need for grip strength and favorable
- bicep strength-to-weight ratio for pulling the body 700' up the cables
- comprise a daunting adventure. These conditions cause some, who reach
- the top of the Sub-Dome, to avoid or turn back on attempting the
- cables.
- ..
- Today, I ascended the cables much better/faster than in 2013. At that

- Difficult to believe I am stronger at age 71, than 3 years ago at 68,
- but was able to climb up 2 and 3 sections before resting, whereas in
- 2013, could only manage 1 - 2 sections.

- Thought for a moment that would be a fun ride. When I did the hike in
- 2014, there were major fires in Yosemite and surrounding areas.
- Hikers were evacuated from the top of Half Dome with helicopters.
- Ross saw this on the news back in Danbury CT, and thought I was one of
- those getting into a helicopter. However, that occurred a week before

- similar to descending a ladder.
- ..
- I went down feet first facing away from the rock surface. This
- presented a terrific 360 view, including the significant rise we would
- have to hike up to reach the top of the sub-dome and back down to the
- switchbacks, explained above. ref SDS 0 1P9K
- ..
- Coming up the cables requires pulling with biceps. Going down is the
- reverse lowering body weight with triceps. In both cases, there is
- minimal footing. Hand grip is therefore crucial. Of course there is
- a big difference between pulling body weight up, which takes much less
- energy than lowering body weight down.
- ..
- Going down the cables was slow, with many delays from people clogged
- on the way down, and from people coming up. If I was more confident
- could have repelled down the outside using just one cable. Didn't try
- it today.

- Coming down staring at the bottom of the cables made the next phase,
- to walk up the slope to the top of the Sub-Dome, seem very difficult
- due to significant fatigue. All the way down, getting to the top of
- the Sub-Dome began to seem impossible, despite having descended it
- earlier in the day. Probably the angle of sight coming vertically
- down the cables makes the continuing slope up the Sub-Dome seem
- steeper than it is. Fortunately, turned out this was a lot easier
- than expected.

-
- Took it slow going down Sub-Dome switchbacks. Only stopped a few
- times to rest and regain balance. Similar to coming down the cables,
- going down these switchbacks takes less energy. However, overall
- fatigue from 8 hours of hiking invites laxity and hurrying, rather
- than caution required for this complex descent. Nearly overstepped a
- few times, but regained balance in time to avoid pitching over the
- edge.
- ..
- Another factor was feet hurting. Took 2 Naproxen pills before
- starting the hike about 9 hours earlier, per above. ref SDS 0 9N9N By
- now, the heightened level of stress on feet was causing significant
- pain. On finally, reaching the bottom of the Sub-dome switchbacks,
- and before staring the long switchbacks, took the 2 Naproxen pills

-
- We descended long switchbacks with Lindsey in the lead. She was
- hustling, and opened big leads, but she stopped twice to eat and
- drink, so I caught up. Lindsey was kind offering some food, but did
- not feel like eating, so declined.
- ..
- This seemed to take much longer than expected, because we only stopped
- twice, whereas we stopped maybe 10 times for me to rest on the way up
- this morning.
- ..
- On reaching Little Yosemite Valley, Lindsey guided us off the main
- trail, so she could use the restroom at a Ranger Station. She earlier
- complained of feeling ill, indicating effects of significant physical
- effort required for Half Dome. After waiting about 10 minutes, layed
- on the ground and leaned back against a log to rest. Lindsey showed
- up about 30 minutes later. She seemed fine, but may have had
- continuing effects of a grueling hike carrying a heavy pack, even to
- this point. Since this is the first time she has done Half Dome this
- year, the level of effort may have shocked her system.
- ..
- On returning, she gave her hand to pull me up vertical. We hiked on
- through Little Yosemite Vallery. On completing this part of the
- trail, there is a rise for perhaps .25 miles. Hiking uphill at this
- point was not fun. Somehow seemed to find another gear and hustled up

- ..
- Lindsey said she could take time for a celebratory drink, before
