1608 - Background
1609 -
160901 - On 140626, Fry's used an industrial air compressor clean dust from
160902 - within the case of c21. ref SDS 2 MP4L This was in connection with
160903 - installing another HDD. ref SDS 2 XG5O
160905 - ..
160906 - Morris has commented from time to time, e.g., on 120428 1150.
160907 - ref SDS 1 MX4L, that it is good practive to regularly use compressed
160908 - air to blow dust from within the enclosed chasis of a personal
160909 - computer. This extends the life of components, particularly the cpu,
160910 - i7-3960x, which is sensitive to heat. Both c18 and c21 also have
160911 - high-end video cards and more memory than stock personal computers.
160913 - ..
160914 - On 140723, disconnected c18. Took it downstairs and outside. Removed
160915 - the cover and used compressed air from commercially sold "End Dust" to
160916 - blow dust from within the chasis.
160918 - ..
160919 - On 150806 processor (i7-3960x) temperatures suddenly increased by
160920 - orders of magnitude on c21 from 20s-30s up to 50s to 70s. ref SDS 5
160921 - 4U5G Openned case and cleaned dust, and that prior experience found
160922 - little dust, expectations would be this is not causing sudden extreme
160923 - increase in temperatures, but after cleaning dust, temperatures
160924 - dropped back to normal. ref SDS 5 MX8I

1612 - Progress
1613 -
161301 - Today, on 160307 cleaned c21 using same procedure, as on 150806 0012.
161302 - ref SDS 5 IL5F
161304 - ..
161305 - Temperatures have increased considerably the past few weeks, reported
161306 - last week on 160304 0933. ref SDS 6 ER5G At that time, took c21 to
161307 - Fry's and paid $70 for diagnostics, reported the same day in another
161308 - record on 160304 1436. ref SDS 7 F38F Ken pointed out that c21
161309 - exhaust registers appear dusty. ref SDS 6 5O9K This was noteworthy,
161310 - but did not seem significantly related to the current issue of c21
161311 - showing severe high temperatures with increased processor activity
161312 - even when no applications are running, except background operating
161313 - system services, and at high frequency, which together cause increased
161314 - temperatures.
161316 - ..
161317 - Today, this analysis appears incorrect.
161319 - ..
161320 - Reviewing the history of c21, found it previously experienced
161321 - temperatures that were dangerously above specified parameters, and
161322 - therefore presented risks of damaging the microprocessor, like today,
161323 - but reported last year on 150806 0012. ref SDS 5 0001 At that time
161324 - last year, the solution was simply to thoroughly dust the interior and
161325 - particularly the exhaust and intake fans to enable optimium air flow
161326 - that maintains system temperatures within design limits. ref SDS 5
161327 - IL5F
161329 - ..
161330 - As a result took c21 downstairs to the backyard. Opened the case and
161331 - thoroughly dusted the interior to remove all dust clogging fans and
161332 - air flow registers, as done on 150806 0012. ref SDS 5 IL5F
161334 - ..
161335 - Today, on 160307, also cleaned c18 again, as before on 150227 1139.
161336 - ref SDS 4 X78J
161338 - ..
161339 - Scheduled next cleaning in 3 months on 150607.
