210502 -
210503 - Hiked to within about .5 miles near top of Half Dome and back, 16

210513 - rigorous terraine for about .5 miles. ref SDS 0 M69J On leaving the
210514 - valley, saw a fire fighting crew who had battled the big blaze that
210515 - engulged Yosemite Valley most of last week; they were waiting for a

210517 - no evidence of fire. ref SDS 0 T39F Finally, made it to the Forest
210518 - Ranger crew checking for permits to take the cables to the top of Half

210520 - joke. ref SDS 0 W77N Ended ascent at 7900, about a mile from the top
210521 - of Half Dome. Feet pain from blisters and metatarsalgia indicated
210522 - potential for severe injuries. ref SDS 0 3X6G Took the short, steeper
210523 - route down from Neveda Falls to Vernal Falls. ref SDS 0 JA9O This was
210524 - an easier descent in daylight hours compared to last year in the dark
210525 - of night. ref SDS 0 KF5I The triumph of the day was Kathy hiking up
210526 - to the Wood Bridge this year, and then up toward Vernal Falls. We
210527 - celebrated with dinner at Yosemite Lodge cafeteria. Picture of Half
210528 - Dome glittering in the evening sun far above the valley, becons to

211434 - Took Glucosamine Chondroitin for left knee, per protocol.
211436 - ..
211437 - Temperature seemed okay, so did not wear a coat which was used to

211439 - ref SDS 31 LV9F
211441 - ..

211443 - water in plastic bottles, must be 20 or 30 bottles, ref SDS 58 X14M,
211444 - like Mil used to buy regularly at Costco, except she got 16 oz
211445 - bottles, one of which was used last year on the Half Dome hike,
211446 - reported on 130918 0620. ref SDS 31 LV9F Clearly, we got out money's

211471 - Paved Path 1st Mile to Vernal Falls Foot Bridge from Trailhead
211472 -
211473 - Follow up ref SDS 31 ZW9K.
211474 -
211475 - Last year we took the shuttle which goes directly to the location for
211476 - starting the Mist trail; however, it departed at 0730, 30 minutes
211477 - later than the 0700 scheduled departure. Last year this delay
211478 - resulted in actually leaving the trailhead at 0800, reported on 130918
211479 - 0620, ref SDS 31 ZW9K, and not returning until after 1900, which
211480 - required walking down the last part of the trail in the dark.
211481 - ref SDS 31 H84K,
211483 - ..
211484 - Today, decided to leave the trailhead at 0600, in order to ensure
211485 - return OA 1700 in sunlight, planned from experience hiking Half Dome
211486 - last year on 130918 0620. ref SDS 31 1M6H Yesterday, on arriving in
211487 - the Valley we drove out to the end of the road nearest the starting
211488 - point for hiking Half Dome, and in order to become familiar with the
211489 - drive, reported on 140916 0722. ref SDS 59 2E6L
211491 - ..
211492 - Last night we considered making another drive back to the place for
211493 - starting the Half Dome hike, but decided against this additional
211494 - practice drive, reported on 140916 0722 at 1722. ref SDS 59 SS4G
211496 - ..
211497 - This turned out to be a mistake.
211499 - ..
211500 - We left the apartment about 0515 in order to reach the trail head at
211501 - 0600, so that the return would occur before sunset at 0700p. Last
211502 - year, returned from Half Dome the last mile or so in total darkness,
211503 - reported on 130918 0620. ref SDS 31 HR5U Stepping down rocks,
211504 - boulders and stones in the dark was difficult - actually slipped and
211505 - fell a few times, but nothing serious, also reported on 130918 0620.
211506 - ref SDS 31 KF5I Some of this might be age, with innate biological
211507 - balance mechanisms beginning to wain. This tends to cause more than
211508 - tentative hesitation traversing difficult terrain. Doubt and worry
211509 - induce missteps and falls.
211511 - ..
211512 - So, this year left in the early morning darkness, in order to return
211513 - with the trail is still in daylight at evening sunset.
211515 - ..
211516 - There are outdoor lights near Yosemite Lodge, but driving away from
211517 - the complex could not see anything except straight ahead with the car
211518 - headlights. Tried to remember the series of turns, but got lost in
211519 - the dark - actually drove in circles, arriving several times in front
211520 - of a sign for the medical clinic in the valley. About the 3rd time
211521 - around, there was a service van on the side of the road with the
211522 - engine running and headlights on. Kathy parked, and I got out and
211523 - went and asked the driver for directions to the Half Dome trail head.
211524 - The woman was very nice. She explained in detail how to make 4 or 5
211525 - turns to arrive at the destination. Since we had already tried this
211526 - route several times, and kept making wrong turns, I asked if she would
211527 - lead us to the Happy Isle shuttle bus stop, which is a short distance
211528 - from the Half Dome trail head.
211530 - ..
211531 - The woman seemed to be an on call service agent. She said since she
211532 - has no calls, she can lead us. Got back in the car with Kathy, and we
211533 - followed the lady about a mile or so to the spot we found yesterday
211534 - that says Do Not Enter, reported on 140916 0722. ref SDS 59 2E6L
211536 - ..
211537 - Got out of the car; Kathy wished me luck, and left. Went and thanked
211538 - the woman for her help. She said the Half Dome trail head is about
211539 - half mile up the road. She asked if I would like a ride, which she
211540 - could provide in her Yosemite service vehicle. So, got a ride to the
211541 - drop off for the Mist trail, which goes to Vernal Falls, and then on
211542 - to Half Dome.
211544 - ..
211545 - Thanked the lady again, and headed up the trail.
211546 -
211548 - ..
2116 -
2117 -
2118 - 0637
2119 -
211901 - So, starting 40 mintes later than planned, but 90 minutes earlier than
211902 - last year, reported on 130918 0620. ref SDS 31 6A3L
211904 - ..
211905 - Walked another .25 miles to the paved route, called the "Mist Trail,"
211906 - that starts up to Vernal Falls. There is a mileage marker sign at
211907 - this location showing distance to Half Domeis 8.2 miles.
211909 - ..
211910 - This makes entire round trip about 17 miles.

211934 - reduced hiking the past 3 months, shown in case study on 120101 0900.
211935 - ref SDS 14 7718 As shown, hiking dropped from 350 miles to less than
211936 - 50 miles per month. Despite taking weeks off at at time, could not
211937 - fully heal, so conditioning declined. The VA medical team did a good
211938 - job getting metatarsalgia pretty well controlled for hiking around
211939 - town, but this came too late to be prepared for Half Dome. Hiking
211940 - Half Dome is essentially traversing a pile of rocks that twists,
211941 - contorts and stresses feet, ankles, knees, hips. In late August, just
211942 - when recovery from injuries seemed in hand, got sick with something, a

211961 - the bridge the trail divides at "Register Rock P." The Mist trail hugs

211970 - Much of this trail is very steep, solid granite rock steps are formed
211971 - from large, irregular stones. The route takes strength and endurance
211972 - to climb, but also concentration to step correctly ascending the trail
211973 - up to Vernal Falls. Steps vary from 6" to over 18" in height and

215569 - Isle trailhead. Very pleased that the trail for the final descent is
215570 - paved.
215572 - ..
215573 - On reaching the trail head, walked to Happy Isle shuttle stop #16
215574 - across a bridge about 100 yards away.
215576 - ..
215577 - Waited about 10 minutes for the next bus.
215579 - ..
215580 - Seemed like it took forever to get from stop #16, to the end of the
215581 - line at stop #21, then back to stop #8 at Yosemite Lodge (see

215907 - When the shuttle arrived at Yosemite Lodge about 1530, walked to the
215908 - room at Maple complex.
215910 - ..
215911 - Kathy was in the room and had great news. She had not only reached
215912 - the Wood Bridge today, she went on up to nearly half way to Vernal
215913 - Falls. This exceeded her goal from last year. She may may have just
215914 - left the bridge, when I called from the top of Vernal Falls, per

215918 - Apart from the feet, actually felt much better this year, since did
215919 - not go all the way to the top of Half Dome. We celbrated Kathy's big
