050578 - 2. By luck, destiny, or both, I was fortunate to attend all my
050579 - K-12 school years in Cupertino, California. I attended the old
050580 - Collins Elementary School K-6 and first met Sam Lawson when I
050581 - was in the 4th grade. I participated in a summer recreation
050582 - program at Cupertino Junior High School and this program was
050583 - run by Sam with the assistance of some other outstanding
050584 - educators like Dick Campbell and Ken Simpkins, to name just a
050585 - few.

050588 - 3. At age sixty. I can still see Sam running around with
050589 - boundless energy to organize, teach, coach, encourage, and
050590 - Discipline the many fortunate kids who were able to take part
050591 - in the various activities offered by Sam and his staff. I must
050592 - emphasize Sam?s Discipline because he was the master at it! He
050593 - did it with a real sense of fairness and love. He probably
050594 - invented "tough love" and exemplified it long before all the
050595 - modern educational "psychobabble" came along to disrupt and
050596 - confuse some of our current teachers and administrators who
050597 - have lost control of their classrooms, parents, and
050598 - curriculums. In a nutshell, Sam Lawson?s ?leadership by
050599 - example? with good old common sense Discipline may be his
050600 - greatest legacy to us all.

050610 - 4. Sam was also an outstanding athlete and he was able to train
050611 - other teachers, coaches, and kids with the skills required to
050612 - be competitive and sportsmanlike. Most notably, I was
050613 - introduced to ground tumbling and the trampoline, which had an
050614 - extremely important impact on all my sports activities,
050615 - particularly in wrestling, gymnastics, diving, and the pole
050616 - vault. We also played flag football, softball, volleyball,
050617 - badminton, and had fun relay activities because Sam new how to
050618 - design a very well balanced program to meet the needs of a wide
050619 - range of kids.

050622 - 5. Sam and his staff understood how a properly run Sports and P.E.
050623 - program could build character and keep kids ?Fit for Life.? If
050624 - there had been more Sam Lawson types teaching P.E over the past
050625 - 50 years, P.E. programs would be stronger today. Instead they
050626 - are barely hanging on against the onslaught of ?academic
050627 - pedagogy,? apathetic administrators and legislators who have
050628 - systematically diluted most P.E. programs in our public
050629 - schools. Sam would not be pleased with the current state of
050630 - youth fitness, trashy behavior by many athletes, and the
050631 - general decline in physical education. Hopefully the Cupertino
050632 - Union School District is an exception to this decline because
050633 - of example set by Sam and others in those early years. P-2

050636 - 6. On a very personal note, Sam Lawson was, in my opinion, the
050637 - founding father of all the great Cupertino Wrestling Programs.
050638 - My brother, Rodney, and I were two of the earliest
050639 - beneficiaries of this wonderful mentor. Sam himself was a
050640 - product of the late great coach, Ted Mumby, and along with
050641 - Ted?s son Hugh, brought wrestling into prominence in our
050642 - schools in the 1950s. He always stayed connected to the sport
050643 - and it was my privilege to honor Sam in our Homestead
050644 - Invitational Wrestling Tournament in 1970. There was not a
050645 - person attending that day who had any doubt that this was a one
050646 - of the greatest coaches and educators to represent the sport of
050647 - wrestling in the entire Santa Clara Valley.
