040906 - sunglasses. 30 minutes later nearing Thompson, the sun was out - not
040907 - a cloud in the sky. Called Bob with the cell phone. He drove my car

040909 - Thanked Bob, saying that Millie would kill me for hiking in the sun

040953 - hiked 11 miles need to stretch out a bit. Allen offered to sit in
040954 - the back seat, but Bob and I both knew it would be impossible for
040955 - Allen to get into the back seat. Bob wanted to take his car because

040959 - Solved problem by Bob driving my car. Allen insisted on sitting in
040960 - the back seat, so moved the front seat forward to give him maximum leg

040964 - Bob drove at 80+, commenting on how well the car drives. He was not
040965 - aware of speed, because the roadway was excellent. Bob expressed
040966 - worry about getting a ticket. He explained being cited for excessive
040967 - speed last year, and indicated today that if he gets another ticket
040968 - within 2 years his car insurance premium will be increased. Driving
040969 - at 80+ MPH today may have reflected determination to reach the Mosby
040970 - Winery at 1300, and that we started 10 minutes later than planned.

040973 - Driving in the left (fast) lane on highway US 101, Bob has difficulty
040974 - staying within the lane. The car continually struck left roadway
040975 - markers, which provide a safety alert to avoid driving off the road.
040976 - On recognizing he has swayed too far left, Bob over compensates and
040977 - swerves too far right striking the dividing lane markers. Swerving
040978 - left, there is again overcompensation striking the left lane markers.

040984 - Allen and Bob went into the wine tasting area, which is separated
040985 - from the main house. After a few minutes, Allen came out and

040990 - Walked through the grounds. Told Bob remembered being here from prior
040991 - occassion when he and mother took Millie and me about 5 years ago.

040996 - Turns out this was a charity event raising funds for housing veterans.

040999 - An Honor Guard contingent from Vandenburg Air Force base nearby was on
041000 - hand to perform ceremonies retiring old US flags which have become
041001 - tattered and so nominally would just be thrown away. However, there
041002 - is a strict ritual. The flags must be burned, and handled in a
041003 - particular way. Attendees, who all paid admission today, which
041004 - included music and dinner, also brought flags from home for correct
041005 - retirement. Allen brought 6 flags!

041008 - We sat at a table with other military types, so Bob and Allen could
041009 - share experiences from their time in the armed forces.

041012 - Sitting next to Allen was a couple. The man related interesting
041013 - service at several stations around the world, including the Allution
041014 - Islands that separate Alaska from Russia. Allen and Bob were
041015 - familiar with some of these locations.

041018 - While folks enjoyed wine and hordourves, hiked to the top of the

041023 - Allen has a terrific sense of humor. After dinner and ceremonies were
041024 - concluded, Allen commented while driving home that the guy at their
041025 - table must have been 120 in order to have all the experiences he
041026 - related. We laughed, and talked about Allen could have commented to

041057 - After dinner, the flag burning ceremony was performed. Allen
041058 - explained that US flags are folded so that 13 stars for the original
041059 - 13 colonies are always showing. This reminded of the burial ceremony

041064 - The Honor Guard took a position across a courtyard from the outdoor
041065 - dining area. Earlier Bill Mosby had setup an steel barrel with
041066 - burning wood or something. Attendees lined up and one by one marched
041067 - across the courtyard to the Honor Guard. One member of the Guard
041068 - picked a folded flad and in a formal precise rutual placed the flag in
041069 - another members hands. This was then held to the soldiers chest,
041070 - until a civilian attendee stepped forward. The flag was then handed
041071 - to the attended and the soldier saluted smartly. Most of the guys
041072 - were veterans and returned the salute. Some of the guys and most of
041073 - the ladies were not military, but still did their best to return the
041074 - salute. They then turned and walked a few feet to the burning barrel
041075 - stopped formally and dropped the flag into the flags. Stepping back
041076 - there was another salute, and then turned and walked back to the
041077 - common area where guests were observing the ceremony. This was
041078 - repeated for each of about 40 or so flags.

041089 - After arriving home, Bob complained of a sore shoulder. He said this
