- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 4 0000, ref SDS 3 0000.
-
- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Gary saying...
-
- 1. There are many places in older records where the old form of
- SDS line references are used.
- ..
- 2. As these are not stable under editing of the destination
- record, I think we should consider researching and fixing them.
- ..
- 3. Creating a Perl script to recognize and creating an SDS record
- with a list of references should be doable.
- ..
- 4. This would allow going directly to the references. It would
- still require determining where in the destination record the
- reference should go, but the link to the record at least would
- be available.
- ..
- On 971119 planning to convert links from legacy line number format to
- anchors showed that investing time is required to exercise judgement
- about where an anchor should be placed to support a line number link.
- ref SDS 2 R25L
- ..
- Gary continues...
-
- 5. It might not be too much of a problem within SDS, but all such
- references are broken in HTML, even if the record is on the
- web.
- ..
- On 971119 some key records were identified for conversion to support
- communication and education about Com Metrics. ref SDS 2 P270
- ..
- Gary continues...
-
- 6. Where do you think this ranks in importance. Should I add such
- a script to my list to develop?
- ..
- On 980325 report progress on this task that provides a baseline of
- records on the Internet for demostrating theory and practice of using
- the Internet to deliver anytime, anywhere intelligence. ref SDS 3 0001
- Looks like the original task took several weeks to a month or more.
- ref SDS 3 549N
- ..
- Gary explains today there are still quite a few links on the Internet
- that have not been updated.
- ..
- My sense is this is a low priority item, because the value of links
- comes from use. When we use a record, if there are legacy line number
- links, they are converted as needed. This distributes the time for
- conversion across a long time span, making it incidental to large
- goals at any given time. It can be very frustrating sometimes to come
- across a record that fits current needs for linking and find it is
- riddled with legacy line number links, because it can take 20 minutes
- to an hour to make the conversion. A fairly recent example is the
- record Gary cited on Landauer's work. There are a series of these
- records, beginning on 960321. ref SDS 1 0001 Probably took an hour or
- so to convert legacy links just in the one record that Gary cited.
- ..
- Based on this experience, to seek out and convert all legacy line
- number links, regardless of the frequency of use, seems like a big
- stretch to find the time. Conversion could take days to weeks, if all
- done at once, based on the prior experience reported on 980325.
- ref SDS 3 549N
- ..
- On the other hand, it is pretty rare these days to run across
- "important" records that have not already been converted, like the
- Landauer records. So, while there still a lot of records with legacy
- line number link formats, the implication is that they are not
- "important" because otherwise they would have been converted.
- ..
- Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Gary with link to this record for
- response.
-
- Mention that the list of records on 971119, ref SDS 2 P270, might
- support the project he has described about upgrading the Com
- Metrics web site to guide people toward records that tell the SDS
- story.
